Unless I really don’t like volume one (not the case so far), I plan on reading volume 2. I already bought it . I imagine we’ll talk about forming an offshoot when we get closer to the end of volume 1.
I didn’t know about the third book. I’d be willing to give it a try as well. Glancing through it, most kanji don’t have furigana, so it might be some more effort to get through it.
I already bought volume 2 as well. I’m not actually sure when people discuss offshoot clubs, I was planning to look through some other threads to figure out the timing.
The only reason I was aware of this other book is because someone else found it when looking into the club and was asking me about the tags since it gets tagged as horror sometimes. It’s essentially a spin off manga, but it covers an arc from the game. It’s a lot darker and horror esq and as you mentioned doesn’t have furigana, so I’m not sure how appropriate it is for people already reading the first book. However, if people are interested and are aware of it being darker/ potentially triggering I wouldn’t mind doing a more relaxed/ unofficial club with it. (aka not having a set schedule but a place for questions/ discussion and vocab).
And yeah, @bearytoast the third chapter is only available on Pixiv and nowhere else. I wouldn’t describe it as a true spin-off, because having looked through all 3 volumes the story definitely does not form a complete narrative without reading 死の海。That said, it is definitely a lot darker than the first two volumes. Specifically there’s body horror, a couple scenes of violence and one particularly disturbing scene with implied sexual assault. So I would definitely understand stopping at the second volume - there’s probably a reason why the last portion’s only on Pixiv.
Yeah I guess spin off isn’t the correct word. It’s technically a separate series, but it does just pick up from volume 2 and complete the story. I think having an unofficial/ non-scheduled club if there are enough people interested would be okay as long as its made very clear that the third book has the things you’ve mentioned and maybe have a set of rules for hiding or blurring anything that pertains to the more dark stuff so people have a bit of I guess warning. I’m pretty open to suggestions and opinions on the topic of the third book and how to go about it/ if we should go about it.
Yeah this manga is a bit weird and I didn’t realize that when I nominated it. Essentially it’s based off a Japanese RPG that is rated I think 17+ and has a bunch of warnings associated with it due to the material that is in 死の海 (which is the later arc of the game I think). However, when they decided to make the manga they went with a much more kid/ all ages theme for the commercial release. (I originally only knew about this and not the game etc) I think it’s also why 死の海 is only on pixiv and a bit challenging to find, since they probably didn’t want kids to stumble on to it. If we do decide to have a thread for 死の海, I think it would need to be more of a read at your own pace, but here’s a place for asking questions/ discussions and have a lot of content warnings, so people know what they’re getting into. I also would want to have some pretty strict rules on blurring or hiding things that may be sensitive. I’m still very open to suggestions to if we should have a thread for it and what would be a good way to go about it if we do.
To clarify on me picking undecided: I’d probably like to, but I feel like at this point I’m jumping into too many things at once and spreading myself too thin so I wouldn’t want to pick up too much more
I have the new chapter thread up and have made a home thread for book 2! Book 2 Home Thread!. If you plan to continue reading please head to that thread to vote on when we should start! (chapter 6 thread link will be in the schedule!)
The poll to vote on the start date for volume two will close tomorrow evening {Tuesday}. If you would like to join in on the next book you can vote here → Volume 2 Home Thread
We will be starting volume 2 on November 20th for anyone who’d like to join! @Micki is it alright if I post about the offshoot on the absolute beginners thread?
