咄と what word is this

咄と this word could be hanashi, totsu, shikaru, I already realized that there are many words or rather kanji that have different ways of being read, is there a right way? or are they all the same

I’ve never seen that word.

Is there a chance it was supposed to be 咄嗟 and they just messed up furigana or something? That word is used semi often, at least.

If you have the source text maybe I could help a bit more.

咄と doesn’t turn up anything in the dictionaries I use, so whatever comes after the と would be helpful (the full sentence even more so)

しかる would be 咄る, though it seems the verb isn’t written that way anymore. と wouldn’t directly follow the kanji with this reading, anyway

咄 could be はなし, but it isn’t commonly written that way, and even then it seems really only to be used to refer to rakugo and the like (はなしか, “professional rakugo storyteller,” may be written 咄家)

It can be とつ when on its own, and in that case it seems to be a word uttered while harshly scolding someone, from the kanji’s “clicking one’s tongue” meaning. At least, I think that’s what the entry is saying:

None of the cases where it shows up outside of a kanji compound are common. Context is always helpful, but in this case especially so.

咄とっ嗟さに叫んだつもりだったが、十年以上もロクに声を出していなかった俺の声帯は、肋骨の痛みと雨の冷たさでさらに縮こまり、情けなくも震えた声しか発せず、雨音にかき消された。

so in general there is always a right way of talking and not several right?

Sometimes there are two or more ways to pronounce a single word (usually with one being the most common and others being regional, outdated, or merely uncommon), but yes, most words have only one reading. Sometimes there are two or more words that can be written the same way in kanji and which one it is is determined through context

In this case, however, it’s simply something being up with furigana. That 咄とっ嗟さ should actually be “ 咄嗟(とっさ)” or “咄嗟(とっさ)”
