八章 真打ち悪役令嬢の高笑い

カロラインはただ、最近調子に乗っているモニカ・ノートンに、自分の立場を思い知らせてやろうとしただけだ。
I heard Monica even dared to talk to people or smile (gasp!) occasionally! Lets knock her down a notch.
とても貴族の人間とは思えないみすぼらしい容姿に、みっともない振る舞いのあの娘は、どういうわけか生徒会役員に選出された。
挙句、フェリクスやシリルにダンスの手ほどきを受けたと言うではないか。
Okay, I guess it might be hard to see from the outside how Monica didn’t actually want those usually highly desirable things and was basically forced into it.
「カロライン・シモンズ嬢。モニカ・ノートン嬢毒殺未遂事件における、君の言い分を聞かせてもらおうか？」

あの目薬を売った行商人は「とても苦いが、だからと言って気つけ薬代わりにはしないように」と冗談めかして言っていた。
Ah, I was wondering how she even found out about the bitterness.
この時のカロラインはまだ、知らぬ存ぜぬで通せば逃げ切ることができると、本気で思っていたのだ。
…huh. I guess she’s even dumber than she seems, then. I mean, yes, she did not want to poison Monica and had no idea that this would happen, but can she not see that this is clearly not going her way?
「お詫びの気持ちと言ってはなんですが……実は侍女にお茶を用意させていますの。皆様、喋りっぱなしで、喉が渇いたでしょう？ どうぞ、召し上がってくださいまし」
Oh, how nice! Isabelle is always so thoughtful.
何故、すぐに配らないのだろうとカロラインが不思議に思っていると、イザベルはポケットから小さな小瓶を取り出し、カロライン達にも見えるように指で摘まんで持ち上げた。
Oh, I thought it’s just gonna be bitter, but it seems she’s going to go all the way 
カロラインが強張った顔でカップを睨んでいると、イザベルは扇子で口元を隠してクスクスと笑った。口元を隠しているのに、明確に馬鹿にしていると分かる、悪意に満ちた笑い方で。

Considering that it seems to be illegal to own as a layperson: Probably not.
「毒よ！ この女はわたくしに毒を盛ったわ！」
Look, Isabelle takes this villain thing seriously. I’m sure she knows how to make a drink bitter to ridicule someone without putting poison into it.
故に東部の貴族達は竜による災害が起こり、竜騎士団の到着が間に合わない時、近隣のケルベック伯爵家を頼ることが多い。それはカロラインの実家、ノルン伯爵家も例外ではない。

Okay, this might’ve gone well for Isabelle since she did not play the “leave my prey alone” card, but instead went with “family is family”.
だからこそ、謀反を起こされると一番恐ろしいのが東部地方なのだ。
中央の貴族達は東部貴族が謀反を起こし、中央に兵を向けることを恐れ、東部貴族達の軍隊の規模を縮小したがっているらしい。
だが、東部貴族達とて、そう簡単には軍を縮小できない。東部は常に「隣国」と「竜」という二つの危機と隣り合わせなのだから。
（ケルベック伯爵は、第一王子派でも第二王子派でもない、中立派と聞いたことがあるが……）
シリルが用心深くイザベルのことを観察していると、フェリクスが世間話のような口調でイザベルに話しかけた。
「そうそう、ケルベックと言えば……ウォーガンの黒竜の件は大変だったね」
「その節は、王都より竜騎士団を派遣していただきまして……国王陛下の迅速かつ寛大な措置に、心から感謝しております」
殊勝な態度のイザベルにフェリクスが冗談めかした口調で言う。
「竜騎士団が到着せずとも、伯爵家の軍隊だけで、どうにかできてしまったのでは？」
伯爵家の兵は竜退治に慣れているので、竜騎士団が到着する前に竜を退治してしまうことがしばしばあった。
だからこそ、竜騎士団の派遣など必要なかったのでは、とフェリクスは遠回しに言っているのだが、イザベルは「とんでもない！」と声を張り上げる。
「確かに我がケルベック伯爵家は、何百年も竜と戦い続けてきた歴史を持ちます。そんな我々を以てしても、黒竜と対峙したのは二〇〇年前の一度きり。ウォーガンの黒竜を撃退することができたのは、竜騎士団の皆様の尽力と、〈沈黙の魔女〉様のおかげですわ」
So, I get how asking whether her dad will actually abandon her neighbor over this whole affair is relevant. But… what’s the point of all this exposition about possible rebellions, and about Felix bringing up that whole dragon business? I don’t see the relevance.
領土内で黒竜が発見された時、ケルベックの人間は皆、絶望に嘆いた。
竜は災害だ。その中で最も恐れられているのが黒竜である。
黒竜の鱗はありとあらゆる魔術を弾き返し、吐き出す炎は防御結界をも焼き尽くす冥府の炎。過去には黒竜一匹で国が滅びたという伝承すら残っている。
Dragons are a natural disaster, black dragons are especially bad, much resistance, very fire. It’s been zero pages since we got the explanation about black dragons again. I think this is the third or fourth time?
そういえば、モニカは女子寮の屋根裏部屋で暮らしているらしい。ケルベック伯爵令嬢がそうするように仕向けたのだとか。
（本当はイザベル嬢に、あまりあの子を苛めないでくれと、釘を刺しておきたかったのだけどね）
Oh, Felix acknowledged that situation!
イザベルがモニカを苛めている理由をフェリクスが訊いてしまえば、王族がケルベック伯爵家の内情に首を突っ込んだと判断されかねない。
ケルベック伯爵家は中立派の大貴族だ。第二王子のフェリクスとて、簡単に干渉できる存在ではない。
Ah. Okay, that makes sense. I guess he isn’t really as free to do things as he likes as it might seem.
まぁ、モニカがイザベルに苛められて泣いているのなら、自分がその分甘やかしてやればいいだろう。

分かりやすい苛め役がいる方が、あの子リスを手懐けやすい。

（最初はシリルにその役目を期待していたんだけど……最近の彼は彼女に甘いからなぁ）
I forgot how much of a schemer and teaser he is.
「まぁ、連中が書類や馬車を揃えて、どんなに上手く外面を取り繕ったところで、演じる奴がマヌケならどうしようもないがな」
But… wasn’t the problem at hand that the apperance of the carriage wasn’t perfect, instead of “the performers were idiots”?
「あぁ、だけど今は少しだけ機嫌が良いんだ。なんと言っても、久しぶりに彼女の名を聞けた」
「彼女……とは？」
訝しげな顔をするウィルディアヌに、フェリクスはゆっくりと唇の端を持ち上げて笑った。
そして、その名を口にするだけで、嬉しくて堪らないと言わんばかりに声を弾ませる。
「〈沈黙の魔女〉レディ・エヴァレット」
Ah, right - that might actually be why he brought up the dragon early to Isabelle!
あぁ、その光景は僕も見ていたよ──と。
Not that I had any doubts, but it’s nice to actually have him admit it!
「魔術には膨大な計算が必要なんだ。人間が詠唱をするのは、難解な数式で途中式が必要になるのと似ている。慣れれば多少の省略はできるが、複雑な数式を見て、いきなり答えに辿り着くことはできないだろう？ ……だが、それができる人間が一人だけいる」
Okay, maybe he’s also interested in Monica because her ability to do math reminds him of Lady Everett
I wonder what would happen if he learns that the timid 子リス and his adored 〈沈黙の魔女〉レディ・エヴァレット are the same person. His head would probably explode trying to merge both images.
難解な魔術式の最適解を一瞬で導きだせる──故に詠唱を必要としない、天才魔術師。それが〈沈黙の魔女〉だ。
And we finally learn how Monica is (likely?) able to do chantless magic!
「イザベル嬢とは、〈沈黙の魔女〉のファン同士、仲良くなれると思うんだけどな……」
I can imagine them having regular secret fan club meetings
「あぁ勿論、自重するよ。表向き、私は魔術に詳しくないということにしておかないといけないからね」
I wonder why. And if that also includes being able to do magic.
That was a great chapter! A bully got what they deserved (even though I’m a bit disappointed that she never seemed to reflect on what she did at all - we got zero character growth here), and we finally learn the specifics of how and why Felix got to the place that was described at the end of the first volume prologue.
Hm, I’m late in commenting. All in all, fun chapter.
Yeah, so far it looks like her function in the story was really just to be a two-dimensional antagonist. At this rate, I won’t be sorry if they really throw her out of school and we’ve seen the last of her.
Could you repeat this again? I think I didn’t quite catch it the first five times.
(I liked how there’s a convincing, political reason for why Felix can’t go against Isabelle even if he buys her bullying act, though).
Indeed. So what was the plan here? Did he invision a sort of good-cop-bad-cop setup where Monica would trust him more, because Cyril was supposed to play the bad cop?
Both actually. Was this Elliott’s line? If so, maybe he was focusing on his own contribution more. After all, Monica was the one who spotted the error in the sigil, but Elliott noticed that the driver didn’t behave like a proper manservant should.
Interesting bit of tension in this scene between Felix and Elliott, too.
My god, yes. They’re a match made in otaku heaven. Alternatively, Felix could establish a Monica-centric bookclub with Claudia, since both of them seem to love her publication(s).

Also, why was he traipsing around on neutral territory incognito that day?
Apparently? I mean, that’s what did kind of happen, only the whole student council was bad cop and Felix was… teasing-playful cop?
Oh, yeah - I completely forgot that!
I like that he actually feels almost borderline disrespectful sometimes when talking to Felix. If I didn’t know their standings, I’d think that they are more evenly matched.

Good point. I completely glossed over the fact that he said that he just coming back from some incognito trip, but didn’t describe why. To be fair, I was more concentrated on him finally admitting to being that admirer!
Yeah, I guess it’s because the line of succession isn’t clear. Felix is in a position where he has to convince other nobles to join his faction, and it evens out the power balance. We’ve recently seen this with both Elliott and Isabelle. Very interesting setup.
Hm, yes. But still, Felix doesn’t seem to be satisfied with the outcome and blames it on Cyril not being a bad enough cop
