今晩は, Suggestion

I feel like 今晩は should have a warning for people who accidentally type the particle as " わ" instead of “は”. It’s the only word I’ve seen so far that uses that pronunciation, and I feel like it’s an easy mistake to make that shouldn’t be penalized. After all, if someone types it as “こんばんわ,” then they clearly recognized the word and its reading, so marking it as wrong feels… well, wrong.

@Mods what do you think?

I think you (we) should get warned that we’re spelling it wrong. I don’t want to pick up a bad habit this early on. Whether that means being marked wrong or just some kind of hey, by the way-type warning, I guess that’s up to how you like to learn. I like a more strict “no, you’re wrong, do it right” style, but that’s personal preference.

That said, this might be a bad example, because I hardly ever see it in writing, much less in kanji vs. kana

I imagine this kind of mistake is like mistaking hangar for hanger in English (and thus likely infuriating to nitpickers and easily ignorable for anyone else). I kind of agree with ctmf that this ought to be strict, but I don’t think a lot of people use kanji for this in the first place, so I guess it doesn’t really matter too much. :person_shrugging:

When Japanese kids write わ in their notes/daily reflections, they are quickly corrected and told many times, no that’s wrong, by their teachers. But that’s usually educated into them before 3rd grade. But basically, if you’re going to make a mistake that only literally children who are less than 7 years old would make, then it should be counted as wrong.

Also こんにちは (今日は) is another word with は as わ and in almost every sentence in Japanese the Subject marker is usually indicated with that particle は pronounced as わ so … If there’s only two kanji words with that particle は in them, and they’re the most common greetings, I think it should be pretty strict :person_shrugging:

Hey prouleau! Thanks for the ping. As others have mentioned, since こんばんわ is not the reading/spelling, the answer is incorrect, and therefore needs to be marked wrong.

When the typo protection for visible kana feature reappears, it’ll trigger a warning for this mistake.
