Last Chapter
It definitely didn’t have the impact of the last chapter of volume 1, but we did get a bit more insight into how Shi-san fought and what happened after. You pretty much got a direct answer to the question you had back then:

I actually really liked this chapter, it was slow and on the surface, sure not much happened, but that slow feeling with Shi-san reminiscing and even the little walk Rakka and Shi-san had was kind of nice, like their friendship I guess.
Honestly I was kind of expecting Isaac to die in the dungeon, like maybe the last giant was in there but Shi-san missed it. But we got a diary, interested in what it contains, but not so interested in what’s likely going to be a big page of hard to read messy Japanese text.
So, volume 3 next week?
Indeed.
I guess I’m an outlier given all the 5/5 ratings on Natively, but I didn’t care for this volume much. The good chapters were as good as the good chapters in volume 1, but there were too many bad or uninteresting chapters as well. I didn’t care for any of the magic stuff (just didn’t feel like it fit into the world to me) and some chapters like last week’s weren’t interesting. The final chapter was okay, but not great.
I will keep reading with the group since there’s just one more volume and it’s an easy read at one chapter a week. Hopefully it improves again by focusing more on the main characters and the lore of the world.
I agree with you that it’s definitely nowhere as good as the first one. I debated with myself giving it 4 stars, but I really liked the first three chapters, so that’s where my 5 is coming from. Maybe my love for the series is tinting my opinion here too much, and I should’ve gone for 4 after all. If Brandon ever implements half-stars, I’ll downgrade it to 4.5.
For what it’s worth, I think volume 3 is much better than volume 2, and I hope you’ll like it too.
I liked the first and second volume about the same. I also enjoy chapters that focus on the recurring characters and the worldbuilding more than purely standalone stuff, but the first volume also had a bunch of underwhelming chapters. All in all, I really like the style of this series, and even in the chapters that didn’t contribute much to the overall storyline, it’s not like I was bored or anything. And I think it’s the perfect level for me, languagewise. I’ve been getting more used to the style and mostly felt that I could understand volume 2 more fluently than the first one.
Time to say goodbye to this thread, and welcome a shiny new one:
I’m almost one year late, but I finally got to this volume and finished it in one sitting (my first Japanese bing-read!!!)
I have to agree with @seanblue about this volume. I did enjoy reading the stories, but I would’ve liked reading some of them as part of “extra chapters” or something. Right now, I feel like most of the chapters didn’t add much to the plot or characters. I may be completely wrong, though - maybe I’ll find that out in volume 3!
Also, Abel is my favvvvvv character in this volume, that sweet, cute innocent baby
Also, I really enjoyed reading everyone’s comments and thoughts!
Welcome to the club! So good to see someone enjoying this again. This was the first club pick I ever finished and talking about it still takes me back…
Thank you!! I’m looking forward to read the 3rd volume and enjoy everyone’s thoughts again :')
Hey friend!
Ooh I really want to read these someday. When is volume 3 expected? I’m reading too much, though🙈 not sure I’ll make it… maybe for an eventual volume 4 if it’s ongoing!
No the series is already completed and we have read the 3 volumes
You should!! It’s interesting and I think you’ll like it. I think it’s also easier than Slam Dunk, so maybe all you need is a few weeks to finish all the volumes (not to add on to your never-ending reading lists though, sorry )
OK thanks!
Thank goodness!
Can’t believe I didn’t notice the club already did 3 volumes
