And I’m done ![]()
Loved this part. I saw nothing coming xD I thought all those 400 pages were irrelevant but loved that the pretty much the whole cast had major parts.
Didn’t see it coming with Yuri and Machiko teaming up, and Machiko betraying Yuri. Didn’t see it coming with Kusakabe actually being Cortesia LA’s boss, and everything being just a test. Makes a lot more sense now, and explains everything that happened with not-fiancee.
Also it didn’t click for me in the previous part that Midori was Morisawa, I thought that there was one extra layer were Morisawa was using Midori, oops. But wow, people are good at being disguised it seems. Reminds me of the first book where the killer was disguised as an old lady. Can’t trust anyone’s appearance it seems.
All in all, my favorite book of the series so far. I would be happy to continue and read the others, after a few months break ![]()
Also finished finally..
I read the last 150 or so pages these last 2 days (kept renewing it from the library but it was the final return deadline) and didn’t want to stop to make posts for each section, so lumping stuff together here:
Overall, this book felt very long. it took me a long time to read too, almost 2 months (although it was very stop-start). The first 300 pages or so, I didn’t really get into a rhythm - there were good parts, but it was very wordy and just felt too long. But I think the best part of the book by far was the last 1/3rd around the climax/aftermath. The party section had me completely gripped and I couldn’t put the book down, and I do see how having all the buildup and preparation for it helped it to be very impactful.
Me too, I couldn’t quite work out the wording because it felt weirdly written, then 30 pages later it turns out that actually that was natural, because it was a confusing situation!
I didn’t see Kusakabe being the boss at all either too, that was very surprising. Also with Yuri and Machiko but that seemed less out of the blue maybe
The staff uniform just being from a 通販サイト was a bit boring, I was expecting details of Morisawa stealing a uniform sneakily or something like that.
It was very nice to read the contrasting accounts given by both of the women involved on the other side, Yuri and Machiko. Of course it’s impossible to get a perfect picture of what happened since they’re just saying the opposite to each other for the most part, but it was an interesting way of presenting it, just putting their testimony down in stream of consciousness and kind of leaving it to the reader. They’re both crazy of course, but having them go in turns helps to establish directly what their problems are. Machiko was less honest it seemed to me, but maybe Yuri was just better at telling their side of the story/lying.
I did like how 東野圭吾 essentially wrapped the story up with almost all the customers of note being involved in the party/some secret behind the scenes stuff, it was nice. I was expecting just a reveal of one person involved and the rest are uninvolved completely, like we had in the first book.
I did enjoy it, but it was a lot, too long for me. Would be happy to read the next book at some point but need several months off first!
Also the film adaptation of this book, I’ve been saving for a while to watch (since I read book 1), so I’ll watch that soon. The film of the first book was very good, I’d recommend it.
And thank you @Akashelia for setting up the threads and the club!
Yay, happy you finished!
Actually in hindsight, my comment in part 3 was spot on ![]()
And that was exactly why he was here haha.
Yay! The next book seems to be a bit shorter. I’m thinking August? We can check in again how we feel this summer ![]()
I think for every book of the series I read I was thinking to myself that it would make great movie material. You can really clearly imagine their faces and reactions when the different things happen! Would probably also help to see the movies to put faces on names, because I have a clear picture of who the two main characters are, but the rest in my head is all blurred into two categories, “male hotel staff” or “male detective” ![]()
