  1. What did you think of the new character Kasumi? And the introduction of Team Rocket?

  2. Do you think Red and Kasumi will find the moon stone?

Gonna try catch up this week

Here’s some lines I had trouble with. I’ll share em in case anyone else had the same questions or any further insight.

(p. 77) オレをそのへんのガキと一緒にすんなよ

”と一緒にする” can mean “to lump in with” so its something like “Dont lump me in with those brats” I’m not exactly sure who the そのへん is referring to here but it may be something more like “dont lump me in as just some kid”

(p. 86) ポケモンを強化するのに重要な力をもつ石らしい

I always have some trouble when のに is used like this. I’m fairly certain the professor is saying “It’s a stone that seems to have the incredible power to strengthen pokemon” but I don’t have the clearest understanding of it grammatically.

Did anyone catch what the professor was saying in the corner of page 85? The scans I’m reading are too low res for me to read it.

I think the first one is その辺, that might lead you to some better dictionary entries

Page 86 Grammar

Yes! I believe you have the right understanding of the sentence.

Maybe you have encountered this before, but I think it’s this form of のに that is being used
Here, の is nominalizing the verb 強化する, or, turning the verb into a noun if that makes sense. Like how「読むが好きです」is wrong, but 「読むが好きです」is correct. You’re not doing the action of reading, you like the action of reading.

And に has the same meaning as usual, same as if you said, for example 「ポケモンに大事なことだよ」
So it’s just the two meanings squished together の and に, both playing a part to the meaning of the sentence.

So with your translation of the sentence, “It’s a stone that seems to have the incredible/important power” = 「重要な力をもつ石らしい」
“To strengthen Pokemon” = 「ポケモンを強化するのに」, the action of strengthening a pokemon is being talked about as a noun.

Sorry that was long, hopefully that helps a little?

I’m assuming you mean the more handwritten parts? Mine is a bit blurry too  but my best guess is

In the second panel of the page:
「そもそもギャラドスはコイキングが」「口からハイドロポンプ」
And the fourth panel of the page is:
「…であるからして」

Thanks! Thinking of the entire ポケモンを強化する as a noun helps me wrap my head around it.

Here’s some closeups from page 85 in the physical version.

You read it well! It does kind of look like there might be a period after で, as follows:

「…で.あるからして」

If that’s the case it’d be an English-style period though, and I don’t know if Japanese folks ever use those in handwriting. I could also see it just being a stray dot lol

Wow, that is so much crisper :sob:
Thanks!

I now understand the advantage of physical books…I could not read that first word :sob:

I like the way Team Rocket feels actually evil in this! Straight to the point with their performance-enhancing drugs! Haha Pikachu taking out yet another ground type :joy:

Not too much troublesome grammar in this part, but a couple of fun words amongst others I picked up:

  • わすれる - for when Kasumi is introducing herself, “I forgot but…” (ignoring how long I was trying to figure out what the “good” いい thing she forgot was)
  • せる - Get down!

Caught up after getting sick after the first week  Pikachu is so cute I love the sassiness

I love pikachu in the manga, I was never too bothered with it in the anime. I think I mentioned in the main thread that the manga made me really like a bunch of new pokemon I kind of dismissed originally

Heck yeah, I love his little pose after dodging all* of iwaaku’s attacks in the previous chapter

Kasumi is great, she was fun in the anime but I like her manga imagining more.

I wonder what the rest of the gym leaders are going to be like :upside_down_face:

The drugs are interesting but I can’t help thinking “they can jab a needle in Rhydon?!”
I guess its grey skin is rock-coloured but not actually rock?
Also, I gotta say, if Pikachu was this immediately overpowered in the anime and I was Team Rocket, I’d want to capture Pikachu myself :joy:
