It hasn’t yet. I still haven’t gone through and done the proper editing yet because I’ve been busy. I think @ChristopherFritz is working on a couple things with it as well (playing with adding frequency). I’ll try and set some time aside this weekend to get the edits complete and then we can revisit opening it once we know we aren’t risking breaking it too terribly.
I’ve gone ahead and opened the vocabulary sheet for viewing:
It will be available for editing by the time the book club begins. It’s not fully ready to go at the moment, but it’s fine to view to look up some words you may want to pre-learn.
Thank you for you comment! You inspired me to join too!
This is my first book club, my first manga (Ijust love the english version) and my WK Level is just 9…
So I was unsure if I would fit in.
But I really would love to start with a manga I really enjoy, so I am gonna get a digital copy, since I am afraid, a print copy wount arrive on time.
(If I manage to buy a digital copy… The preview was japanese, the one I brought was english… wtf?!)
Weird, where did you buy it from? Any of the links from the first post?
And welcome to the club
Physical copy ordered. Looking forward to it!
Bookwalker. Maybe Something went wrong, since my Mail Adresse ist German. They didnt ask for an adress, but i used PayPal, which knows my Adresse. Maybe thats why… Or I am Just stupid.
Edit
Thanks for reminding me about the links, whatever I did wrong befor, now I have the japanese version.
Sadly this one was a bit more expensive, but still not really expensice, so I dont care.
Just happy to be able to join.
This will be my second ABBC and I’ll still be in over my head. But it’s a great way to keep up exposure to interesting native texts (I’ve tried guided readers but they are too dull to stay interested). So don’t worry about understanding every nuance. Of course you have the benefit of already knowing the story in English so that helps!
You got me. I just ordered the physical manga. I’ve wanted to do the book club thing, but the timing never seemed to work well for me. This time, I am ready!
I’m fairly certain that I bought, and quickly returned, the English edition of this manga. It was expensive and didn’t keep my attention. I’ll give it another go.
I nearly completed Genki 1 with a tutor many years ago, and am level 12 wanikani. Wish me luck.
I had a similar experience (except I went digital, so no returns). I wasn’t compelled to continue after finishing the first volume (in English).
I’m trying it in Japanese because many people like the series. That doesn’t mean I will enjoy it, but I figure it’s worth giving it another shot. (I also like that it’s a completed series.)
If this will be your first (or among your first) attempts at reading in Japanese, you can also factor in the dopamine from encountering the occasional sentence you understand without looking up every other word and grammar. That alone may make the material seem more interesting than reading it in English.
Hello everyone! Inspired by other absolute beginners - this will be my first ABBC. I’ve always wanted to be able to read something native, and this sounds like the perfect opportunity. I am sure it will be super hard, but I am looking forward to reading something motivating. Hopefully, I can keep up with you guys. Let’s have fun together!
You may find CD Japan to be cheaper than Amazon…
My main boon for MangaRepublic is that Amazon has delivered damaged books to me several times (Emglish books, primarily). That is why I just won’t order international books from them. If they can’t be bothered to keep books in the same country in decent condition, I have very little faith in their ability to do so internationally.
I do either CDJapan or MangaRepublic.
I can’t even imagine a book from manga republic arriving damaged. They package them like manga are worth more than their weight in gold!
Maybe Canada is different, but I’ve found it cheaper to order from Manga Republic. They do show more order status detail on the shipment tracker on their site. Also if you order $60usd+ they ship priority with tracking (again this is to US).
I’ve compared Amazon.co.jp, and while their issue prices are much cheaper, I always end up with huge shipping costs that make it way more expensive than Manga Republic (maybe I’m doing something wrong).
re: Amazon, hidden due to being slightly off-topic
I don’t want to be rude, but it really bothers me when people say that they “really want” to order from somewhere other than Amazon, then say “but Amazon is cheaper and more convenient”. That’s the whole point. Amazon is cheaper and more convenient because they cut corners, cheat (literally cheat) creators, and have terrible customer service.
I’m not saying I hate you for ordering Amazon or anything (I’ve ordered from Amazon myself in the past and still do if I can’t find what I want anywhere else), but … the difference between Amazon prices and Manga Republic prices when you include shipping are not vastly different, and Manga Republic does have tracking, and in my experience they are usually relatively quick even though they estimate a large window of time. But maybe you don’t have a lot of money, so every penny counts, in which case I definitely don’t hold it against you.
(Sorry for my rantiness.)
off topic
Okay, so you don’t really want to buy from somewhere other than Amazon, you just sorta kinda wanted to buy from somewhere else. That’s fine.
But I wouldn’t say that showing you the actual price you will pay for the book (although pre-tax) is “disingenuous”.
I have deleted all my off-topic posts. I’m asking everyone else to do the same. This is my first time participating in the community and I didn’t expect so much toxicity in response to my attempt to be helpful.
I’m sorry you felt I was being toxic. I was simply feeling frustrated and trying to express myself without hurting your feelings. Clearly I failed, so I do want to sincerely apologize for that. I hope everyone feels welcome here, and if sometimes we argue a little I hope that afterwards we can shake hands and move on.
We have animosity towards Amazon, not you, friend. That animosity can make us say angry things in the wrong direction sometimes. 仲間だよ
