ホリミヤ ・ Horimiya 🎀 👓 (Absolute Beginner Book Club)

So did you end up buying the whole series (except number 1)?

This is the way.

I was in a huge used book store in Nashville a couple years ago and saw that they had all of Demon Slayer on hand. Thankfully I talked myself out of it since I went and looked online later and saw that I could get the whole set new for less than it would have been to get them all there.

No, though I did get Bocchi the Rock volume one. :slightly_smiling_face:

Like me during the last sale, I was only going to buy the “a couple” of Hananoi-kun volumes. Somehow ended up with 12 volumes and 30 君に届け volumes in my shopping cart… the price was so good, I had to close the app before it was too late.

I did end up buying all of the Hananoi volumes available though, and I still think I missed out on the big sale for the other set :see_no_evil:

I also may have bought 12 volumes of ふらいんぐうぃっち and 21 volumes of NANA with the Bookwalker 50% coins back…

I love the series (halfway through in english), but i’m going to wait to buy the full series until a full bookclub is announced…fingers crossed :eyes:

I will live vicariously through everyone elses full collections though :relieved:

If you buy the physical series used make sure to look out for any goodies tucked inside! one of my volumes had this cute bookmark that I’m too scared to actually use because I don’t want to hurt it

Do you know it? I’ve read them as a teen and loved them so definitely going to reread them in Japanese! Even though it won’t be just now, going through my to-read pile by Natively level, I’m at Yotsuba level 18 and Nana is like level 28…

It’s one of my friend’s favorite series of all time! I got her one of the Yazawa Ai art books for christmas last year. I haven’t read it but it’s also been on my japanese reading list for a while, but also still a bit too hard for me to work through that many volumes of it in any reasonable timeframe though  Someday, someday. She’s also the one who convinced me to try out ouran, and I enjoyed that plenty.

One nice thing about buying full sets of older manga used is that they tend to be extremely cheap (at least before shipping), which is how I personally have gotten into some trouble with having far too many books in my tiny apartment

(ホリミヤ only had it’s last volume come out last year, so it’s a bit to new to be this cheap. but i see some 16 volume sets for ~$30 on yahoo auctions jp, which still isn’t that unreasonable, would probably be like $60 after shipping to US. I bought mine right after the initial anime run so it was much higher when I got 1-15 )

I’ve done that with two of my favorite manga, Gakuen Alice and Anonymous Noise. I got 31 volumes of Gakuen Alice for $100 and 18 issues of Anonymous Noise for $40 (both with shipping) on ebay

too tempting… :cold_sweat:

It bugs me a bit that those names are backwards. She’s Hori and he’s Miya.

There’s another one with them flipped, and then some with other characters too. I’m having a hard time tracking them down though, since merch like this kinda just disappears into the void after a while. I remember sending my friend a picture of a yuki/toru one though. One of my volumes also came with a postcard, never know quite what you might find tucked inside

Haha this is so true! I have my physical manga bookshelf ordered by Natively level so I always know which one to pick up next.

I wanted to buy the first Nana and BNHA volumes, but when I checked on Natively it was really high level (bnha was like lv30), so I didn’t. I did end up buying one Kisekoi volume though, it’s lv26, but now it’s sitting at the end of my bookshelf obviously … someday

Yay! I thought I had a full Bocchi set and just the other day I realized I’m missing the last volume! (not that I have the level to read it now though, they’re also sitting at the end of the bookshelf :joy: )

Were you able to read it? I think it’s a bit tough to get the jokes, but I haven’t tried yet.

Wow it looks great! I’ve also read Paradise Kiss from Yazawa Ai but nothing else, manga where hard to get by and expensive in my youth. With Bookwalker it’s a different story :stuck_out_tongue: (I don’t mind not having them physically). So I’ll probably check all her other works!

We will make it :muscle: nice to see some interest for Nana in any case. I’m thinking that when I get to the level to being able to read it, it could be a good pick for the Intermediate book club

My copy arrived today, too!

As always, Manga Republic was ultra careful with the packaging, gifted me protection covers, I discovered a little Square Enix flyer (with something about 狐 that I naturally need to investigate) and my Soul Eater edition seems to be quite special, color pages and a printed protection wrapper that creates a neat effect actually.

I just love the shinigami and Halloween theme, so I admit there’s a lot of eye-candy for me, but I look forward to frustrating myself with actually reading them. :joy:

I’ve never had these before! I got my full yotsuba set from a vendor that had his set stored in a damp dark room (or worse) because I had to clean each manga after they got here :sob: I learned to buy new after that lol

Also, I love these pictures and peeking into other people’s manga interests :eyes: keep them coming

Noo, that’s terrible! :scream: I know I’m picky with my books, but to imagine you having to clean up the whole batch… I don’t get people sometimes, not just because I’m bibliophile, but because I respect the value in material things. Why do people leave stuff to rot when they intend to sell it!? :rage: :anger:

Soul Eater and ホリミヤ from my order are both “used”, actually, allowing me to save quite a bit of money. :innocent:  I can see the signs from close up, but there isn’t a single dent or tear in them. Amazon and even publishers themselves send me new books in worse condition!

Of course, you never know how the people treat their books before they give them to retailers. But with Manga Republic, at the very least I don’t see them accepting books in less then well-maintained condition, and wouldn’t be surprised if they do the cleaning if need be.

I know! It’s so much fun, isn’t it? Feel free to participate, we are all curious here.
