ホリミヤ ・ Horimiya 🎀 👓 (Absolute Beginner Book Club)

I went to my list of ‘purchased’ free books, and found a button to read each individual volume, and that did the trick:

Perfect! Glad it worked. One thing to keep in mind, it looks like the free version finishes on the 18th of August.

There is currently a sale on the first 3 volumes, though, and it looks like that goes until 7/28, so if anyone is looking to purchase still, now is probably the time (the same sale is on Kobo and Amazon JP)

Noted.

I got a bit carried away and ordered 16 used volumes from Japan via eBay… So this will get me started, and if and when the free trial versions disappear I’ll have the hardcopy ones to work with.

I’m not a very accomplished otaku - the only other ‘complete’ manga series that I’ve got on my personal library bookshelf is 日常 (Nichijou), which I bought in both Japanese and translated English versions.

This had better not be the gateway drug to otaku-dom, however…

Hahah. Most of my stuff is digital. So far, I only have two physical series: 青ブタ and 推しの子

Excited to start reading this again with everyone! This was the second full series I ever read in Japanese, and it’s probably one of my favorite series of all time. I’ll never skip a chance to go revisit these nerds

There is a bit of kind of poetic language in the first chapter that might be a bit of a challenge, but I promise most of the series isn’t like that. If you stick with it, it will be well worth your trouble :slightly_smiling_face:

The BookWalker browser viewer is a bit of a pain to use - I will probably get the hang of it, but I’m finding that after magnifying the page and navigating from panel to panel, I often inadvertently end up flipping to the next page or kicking it out of magnify mode - and it’s a bit tedious to get back to the page and panel and magnification that I was using.

Also, it looks like the BookWalker browser viewer is effectively using scanned images such that after magnifying, rather than making the furigana easier to read, it actually makes it harder because it is just a pixellated mess.

Oh well… I’ve gone through the first four pages or so just to get a taste, and I’m mostly understanding what I’m reading.

No, not scanned, just bad quality. Horimiya is notoriously low quality. Probably a combination of long manga and small text.
But ye, the bookwalker browser viewer is certainly one of the pieces of software of all time, but the quality is the exact same on other platforms.

I’ll definitely keep an eye out on this club, despite binging the first volume already. Just couldn’t stop reading.

This is unfortunately the same everywhere else in my experience. The digital version has been compressed with a lossy algorithm at least a couple of times (although probably not actually scanned). I did a bit of investigation in Absolute Beginners Book Club // Now reading: Horimiya // Reading Next: Miss Shikimori is not just cute! - #1891 by eagleflo but I never found the slightly better version for sale digitally – it’s just the publisher preview.

If I knew Japanese I’d write to BookWalker or the publisher and ask them for a revised edition – they do have clean masters, otherwise this wouldn’t get reprints.

Yep, of all the pieces of software that ever existed, bookwalker is definitely one of them.

It requires having various software installed, and some manual parts remain. I’ll give it a go today and see what I can come up with.

At the least, I should be able to get it to a point where I say, “Here’s what needs to be done manually before it’s ready; good luck with that!”

That sounds perfect. Thanks!

Can’t wait! I’ll be joining this as my first book club! My copy should be arriving soon.

oh i just watched season 1 and what’s out of 2 (1.5?) of this series! loved it immediately. I should grab a copy and follow along

Here it is:

It’s restricted access at the moment. Either send a request to be an editor, or post here if you think it’s better for me to open it for everyone, and I’ll do so. (I’m starting with restricted to reduce the chances of someone accidentally breaking it.)

To-do items:

  1. Split chapter tabs into single-week tabs, and remove words for pages not in that week.
  2. Remove duplicates. (Exclude the page number and temp sort columns from this action.)
  3. Review for any entries that look like they are unnecessary and can be removed, or anything that needs correction (kanji in the kana column; no kanji in the kanji column, etc).
  4. Remove temp sort column from each tab.

Perfect! I’ll send a request later this evening (or tomorrow if I fall asleep sooner than expected)

I guess that I’m a bit late to the party - I took a stroll through the other ABBC “Now Reading” thread and discovered that the issues with the BookWalker version of Horimiya have already been discussed a couple weeks ago.

No problem - it’s nice to know that I’m in good company.

hi crew - this is going to be my first ABBC - up to Level 13 on Wani and almost halfway thru Genki 1 - I may be a little behind on the grammar but I’m excited to give it a shot with you all - got my copy ordered - see ya in a few weeks

Oh yesss!! I voted for this  I’m excited to join this bookclub! Can’t wait to decipher together~!

(Accidentally read 16 pages) :eyes: I need to go back to do my reviews

My copy just arrived too

I don’t remember who it was but someone was interested as to the “shipping conditions” from manga republic so for the last order it was:
Ordered: 5.7. (16:30 CEST)
Shipped: 13.7.
Arrived - not exactly sure on what day it arrived and didn’t ask, I had it delivered to my parents, but when I went for a chat with them yesterday, it was there to be picked up

Of course that’s only one small example but still without priority shipping and no shipping costs to be delivered within about 2 weeks (to Switzerland) is absolutely fantastic to me
(And if nobody actually cares about this I am very sorry for all the text ^^')

I popped in to my local Kinokuniya today (mostly because there’s currently an offer where you get a free gingerbread cookie with their mascot, Mochi, printed on it with every purchase) and went to get Horimiya, only to discover they’ve got every volume except volume 1. WaniKani book club magic at work again, probably.
