Chapter 2

Another fun chapter. We went from two of them living in the woods surrounded by creatures, to a whole city full of little people! I guess we knew they had newspapers and a society, but the world suddenly got a lot bigger.

We are also full on with a society of little humanoids and talking animals - with a toad and a mouse announcing the singing winners. And there are some spirits around as well.

Seems fairly slice of life so far rather than any major story arc developing. Interested to see how this develops further.

Chapter 2

Sort of echoing part of what @Micki said, but I think my biggest hesitance with the series so far is the seemingly episodic nature. I feel like one manga chapter is oftentimes not enough to really develop. I was so interested in the world and so hoping for a bit more of an overarching journey. Reading the description it felt very Lord of the Rings but more cute, so I was hoping for something similar “journey” wise. Could still come, but we’ll see - I’m perfectly happy with this format too :stuck_out_tongue:

I liked how we went right away into a larger city and the customs of their people, it really gave a lot of context into their world. I also found the news column much easier to follow this week!

I actually really enjoy episodic series, so this is a bit of a breath of fresh air to me  plus, I always feel that even in these types of narratives, there always ends up being a couple of arcs that span through more than a few chapters, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see this in the future - it could just be that we also have a slower start to set the world-building first, too.

Yah. Though as a tag line, “Tiny little life in the woods, and also a city” doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue. :slightly_smiling_face:

I like the huge pear peeling challenge

Poor Mikochi looked so sad and stressed the whole chapter until the end.

I really like the 付喪神! I came across a similar spirit idea in a children’s book and they didn’t use this word so I didn’t know there was a specific name for this concept of an object that aquires a spirit with extended use

The article at the end also gives the world more character :heart_hands:

Yep. It’s a type of yokai.

Thanks for the article link! Now something my Japanese teacher said makes more sense. She mentioned being part of a jinja ceremony at a factory to replace a machine part, and the article specifically mentions this as a way to appease the unusable part to be replaced.
