So I am not a ONE PIECE expert but this covert really makes me think of it, is it just me?

I don’t know much about One Piece but I suppose that giant octopuses are very pirate-coded.

my favourite thing about the covers is the characters are always wielding cooking implements

Yeah like chopsticks, laddles, plates, lockpicks, etc…

chapter 15

I was a bit confused by the timeline but it seems that this chapter occurs in the middle of the previous one, while Marcille and Senshi deal with the kelpi/soap.

Happy to see the other team come back and I hope that it’s going to be a recurring bit where they get “rescued” by Raios達, think they got played somehow and decide hunt them down only to meet their demise once again!

Raios seemingly losing it more and more due to his obsession with eating every creature he can get his hands on is pretty funny too. I wonder if he even remembers that he’s here to rescue his sister at this point…

I didn’t fully understand the logic of singing the mermaid’s song to have them go away. Is there something I’m missing there? Is there more to the joke or is it just a random thing?

Also the part where Raios wonders if the 麦 having the floating spell is an issue when cooking and Chilchak says that it’s ok because the spellcaster is dead. But she had been dead for a while and they were still floating so what does it mean? Just that the spell is bound to run out soon?

He’s not trying to get them to go away with the song, rather he’s disappointed when they leave. He’s a monster nerd who went through the trouble of learning the mermaid’s song (せっかくおぼえたのに) and wanted to sing the whole thing with them (and it does presumably drown out the magic temptation or however that works), but it’s only natural to leave when some weird stranger joins in your song…

Yeah earlier looking at the bodies he said 水上歩行が切れかかってる - so it was already starting to wear off at that point. I guess if the spellcaster is dead the spell won’t be maintained from that point and so it will just get weaker and weaker over time.

Your explanations are always appreciated!

Yeah I got that part but he had to have known that it would also cancel their power otherwise it would have been stupidly reckless even by his standard. I was surprised that this wasn’t explained more thoroughly since usually this manga has a lore explanation for everything.

Oh I was actually a bit confused by the grammar here, mainly because かかる can mean a billion different things. I guess that in this case it means that it starts to wane?

Thinking about it some more I think the confusion stemmed from the fact that かかる broadly carries an idea of “latching” onto something in my experience, but here it’s paired with 切れる which has sort of the opposing meaning, so in my mind I parsed it as “the breaking [of the spell] is catching on” which does actually make sense now that I think about it but sounded oxymoronic at a glance.

Yeah honestly this is one spot where it’s surprisingly rough looking back at it (when of course it’s funnier in the anime since it’s an audio gag) - Kui’s art style and everything really gets more and more polished as time goes on so I wonder if the transition to the gag would have been smoother or something if it were a little later in the series.

In this case the かかってる is conveying the “has started to / is about to” sense in 切れかかってる - "(the effect) has started to / is about to wear off "
It would be this definition (okay yeah 29 is a lot):

29 他の動詞の連用形のあとに付いて用いる。
㋐今にも…しそうになる。また、ちょうど…する。…しはじめる。「溺 (おぼ) れ—・る」「崩れ—・る」「通り—・る」「立ち—・る」

and gets attached to verbs in the 連用形 form like this (in this case 切れる).

I definitely don’t understand everything in this manga (thanks simias for asking questions, I should start doing the same!) but I definitely enjoy it a lot!

Yeah I think it’s pretty forgiving overall. I force myself to try and understand everything (oddly enough because I now run this book club I feel like I should be on point) but generally it’s still enjoyable if you let the context guide you for some of the trickier bits.

Yes you could get by by not reading Japanese even, monster appears, food gets made, but still it’s nice to put in the effort and get the jokes!

chapter 15

In the last panel on page 21 Laios says:

また最後まで歌えなかった

So he supposedly did not try this for the first time. Though I’m certain he was adequately berated by Marcille at his first try while citing information from some obscure almanac on aquatic dungeon dwellers as basis for his actions.

Yeah, I think I got the feeling from the chapter that he was singing badly and put the mermaids off their game, but in the anime the singing is absolutely incredible. Kinda want to have another listen now…

Huh, I thought in the anime his singing was off-key or off-beat, but I’ll have to revisit. I think the joke works either way (stranger joining in and/or stranger is awful)

I think I remember him coming in at a different tempo, or with a different song, or something. But it was still good singing.

Maybe Laois has the Bocchi problem - you’re great solo, but you gotta work on working with others…

Honestly, revisiting the relevant page, what surprises me most is not that Raios would do such a thing, it’s that chilchak would tag along without complaining. Although I suppose that since he seems more sensitive to the song (because of the ears I presume?) maybe he can’t afford to go alone. Then again the others did ok by just plugging their ears… Well, they did ok for a little while at least.

I can’t with Laios in this chapter!
It feels like one huge step to cannibalism
