Discussion Guidelines

Everybody should feel free to post and ask questions–it’s what makes book clubs fun! But please do not post until you are familiar with Spoiler Courtesy!

Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
  3. Avoid posting any information from later in the game than the current week’s reading. If it is necessary to doing so, it needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags

Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1”]).

Lots of gear battles this week. Hang in there @Akashelia

Week 22, subtitle: 'oh no, it's バベルタワー'

I have to say I’ve been dreading the バベルタワー/Babel tower dungeon since we started the game. Save states before the trickier jumps made it a lot more bearable, though. Yay emulation!

Fuel problems were fine even though I’d upgraded everybody to the 2200 fuel engines in the Yggdrasil and was using my frameHP30s. Remember, if you come across a random monster that looks like a ball with a hose, only do light attacks for easy refueling.

The latest battle with ラムサス was kind of a joke, the way he randomly shows up, gets beat up, and has to be dragged away by ミャン. I guess he’s lost to us enough at this point that the writers are comfortable letting him really lean into being the ineffective B villain. Though I love him for how pathetic he is, not despite it.

マリア is here! If you follow her to her gear maintenance dock and talk to her instead of going straight up to town, she’ll immediately give you an overview of her tragic life story. Sad background music and all. She’s even faster to it than Billy!

シェバト is as always, terrible to navigate with all the elevators. I talked to every NPC I could find in town except for the ちゅちゅs (too much “でチュ”). A lot of stuff about their battle against ソラリス and one NPC said outright that hey, maybe we’d be the ones to renew the opposition effort? Slow down lady, we just got here.

Thank you for the tips on the 3 stones and the treasure vault, I’d forgotten all about it! Now, who to give all these permanent stat increases to…

Oh no! xD Haven’t played this week yet. Hoping for the battles to be not too far from a repair robot.. :crossed_fingers:

Week 22

Haha the Tower was so evil. Good for you @Daisoujou that you’ve already opted out, would have been a nightmare without the emulator. Platform jumping where falling puts you back in the beginning. And three Gears hanging on the rope to jump was hilarious. And then the platform that falls when you walk on it unless you jump before it does, oh my god xD
At least the random encounters were not at random points during that part, they were at fixed locations so you can’t get them mid jump, but still.

Aaah my hero.

Really like the mood and the music of the place where we arrive then.

Hated those stairs though, come on, I thought we’ve just been platforming enough xD

Items

I realized that I have lost interest in chasing rare / unique / cool items. I have so many items and I have no idea what most of them do. I think the lack of clear names (probably my fault for not being native Japanese though xD) and lack of good UI showing how it impacts the stats are to blame. Especially if I’m in a dungeong wearing Gears, then nope, I’m not going to take this long way around to collect this item that I will never use and lose my fuel and health for that

It’s even funnier when you remember we’ve had at least a couple scenes of our gears flying before. Why don’t we get a button for that!? :joy:

Haha, didn’t think about that :x probably they don’t want to spend unnecessary fuel!

time to continue

Week 22

Went around the sky city a bit more than last week. Also did the side quest, I had one of the three required items already but don’t think I would have gotten the rest otherwise! Some fun moments.

This was a funny moment too, definitely thought there was a Fei replica in the house, before realizing that it was a mirror, oops.

Week 22, arrival

Just arrived in シェバト. Had to stop there for now, so I’ll properly investigate the town tomorrow…

… but may I say バベルタワー was absolutely the worst dungeon I’ve played in a LONG while. Holy moly. The random encounter frequency is tuned up to the gills for no reason whatsoever — these mobs were far from the best this game has to offer.

The idea of exploring a 90° rotated dungeon was great, and I loved the cutscenes, but man was the actual gameplay nothing but pain.

Screenshots tomorrow.

so glad I’m playing on emulator so I can save state before jumps for this one

Week 22 screenshots

Had to screenshot it to read it. 警告.

Feels like a space shuttle cockpit.

Loved this whole sequence, shafts of light and sudden speed increase of the tram.

Much closer than during the the first sighting we had, on second or third week?

And there it is. We are inside the flying saucer city. I love how シェバト tech has its own unique almost organic “look”, different from ソラリス.

Once again a lot of verticality that is just not present in 2D games to the same degree. Reminds me a little bit of Zeal in Chrono Trigger — perhaps due to Yasunori Mitsuda’s soundtrack. Been a while since we got a whole new city to explore.

The gear dock was somehow very dark for me? Possible emulation issue?

Once again reminded of the amazing level design and use of camera. This “level 3D, characters 2D” is more evocative to me than the reverse employed in Final Fantasy VII. Although then Vagrant Story had the gall to do both really well in 3D…

Nice pics!

I think we need to be playing that next :x

Man, I must have missed this detail the first time around. What follows is a multimedia serving suggestion on how to enjoy a small optional part of ゼノギアス.

Jukebox

Find this apartment and go inside

There is a short intro scene.

Go to the jukebox and pay 20G to play 遠い約束 (or just click play on this):

And after this, the bartender comments on the song you chose:

What an awesome lil’ scene. I didn’t expect it.

Another gem:

Seriously paid off to speak with the folks inside the city.

Old man speech

His speech resonates well with the lyrics of いつも何度でも
