Discussion Guidelines

Everybody should feel free to post and ask questions–it’s what makes book clubs fun! But please do not post until you are familiar with Spoiler Courtesy!

Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.

  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).

  3. Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.

Instructions for Spoiler Tags

Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1, Pg. 1”]).

Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:

This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.

The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

I read this part a little early in anticipation of a busy work week ahead!

week 11 thoughts

Positive things:

I expected Izumi to be cool under pressure and calmly negotiate and she didn’t disappoint. Love this kind of situation where the protagonist comes out of it like ( •_•)>⌐■-■ (⌐■_■). She went through the whole situation so calmly that I actually laughed when she collapsed at the end. It’s common enough in manga/anime but I still didn’t expect it at all.

I have a feeling that Sekine will show up again later as an ally. The way he changes his attitude throughout the confrontation and ends it with a compliment seems like he’d eventually get over the whole, ya know… kidnapping his son thing.

Now for the nitpicking!

So why didn’t Izumi just tell Sekine that she had his son and that her people would be calling to confirm in only a moment? Or even that he’d be getting a call from her people that would interest him? It might’ve prevented her from being thrown in a pit. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed the scene overall, but the feeling of contrivance niggled. At the very least I hope we find out next week what the other 2 medakagumi members were doing instead of backing her up!

meeting the mob

I thought it was interesting this week, to see Izumi at the receiving end of serious sexual and physical harassment. The scene with all the gang members (and other men on the work site) gathering around the pit and pouring cement in while asking her to remove her clothing was pretty threatening.
The way that she had been accepted in her role as Oyabun without any real hint of that, had always seemed pretty hard to imagine…

meeting the mob

Yeah, they acted much more like what the average person would expect from yakuza. Quite a contrast to Medakagumi, who support their community and won’t touch the drug trade!

I’m finally done as well. This chapter felt a bit harder than the previous ones and there where several lines in the dialogue where I was unsure who was speaking again. But I hope I got the gist.

This week

I wondered about that as well. It makes the scene very dramatic, but doesn’t really make much sense from Izumi’s point of view.

The whole thing with the two members of the Matsunoki who got hired to help kidnap Kenji but were apparently too drunk to remember much about the guy who hired them also felt a bit too convenient. We’ll see if the interogation sheds any more light on this.
