Discussion Guidelines

Everybody should feel free to post and ask questions–it’s what makes book clubs fun! But please do not post until you are familiar with Spoiler Courtesy!

Spoiler Courtesy

Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  1. Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.

  2. Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).

  3. Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.

Instructions for Spoiler Tags

Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1, Pg. 1”]).

Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:

Example

This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.

The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

A couple of bits I couldn’t work out in this dialogue
Sakuma says that he is a widower and then says
and then
I couldn’t work out what he was saying with either sentence here

A page or so later, Sakuma says
and then Izumi replies
again, I’m struggling to unpack this

This is my rough take of it, although I wouldn’t be surprised if I was missing a lot of nuance:

出入り can be used to mean ‘dispute’, as in ヤクザの出入り. とばっちり means ‘getting mixed up in’, so he seems to be saying that his wife got mixed up in or died as a result of a fight between yakuza groups.

Then he says
Even so, (I) still
can’t leave the yakuza (lit: I can’t pull my feet → can’t get myself out of a bad situation)
I think it’s (I’m?) really foolish.

Later, Sakuma says:
Amazingly, this way (that you handle yourself)—
Should I call it being composed or, not floundering?

Then Izumi replies:
I’m just pretending
Because I’m not popular with girls.
People who aren’t popular with the same sex
aren’t really good people
it’s said.

I wonder:

Could 黒木 be the man in the lingerie shop? That wouldn’t necessarily mean that he is the murderer of 健次. Perhaps he is following 泉 everywhere to observe/protect her or to find out whether she knows something about the ominous package. So he could still be a real policeman or a very bad guy … In any case he is well informed about what happens to 泉.

Mmm, I don’t think any of the yakuza have seen 黒木, so I guess that’s possible. Certainly 黒木 still seems pretty suspicious.

Thanks, that is very helpful

I think the fact that whoever it was made sure they weren’t seen or caught by Izumi makes them suspicious and likely the murderer of Kenji (given they were following 元 and 剛).

Also the fact that the lady at the shop said that a detective warned her about Izumi, although it almost seems to line up too well.

I would say Kuroki seems like the most likely. Maybe he has been a red herring all along, but in that case I have no clue who could plausibly be a villain instead (if they’re a character we already know).

Same here.
It was also interesting that the man in the blue suit was so sure that Izumi was going to go into the store alone that he prepared a story to make the saleswoman slow her down. This seems like a clue that it was someone who knows her.

Regarding Kuroki, his phone call afterwards also seemed mildly interesting. He knew that Izumi had gone to the Matsunoki group but seemed surprised to hear the details. So I guess he was trailing her, but doesn’t have anyone on the inside.

Perhaps, but I think the main aim of the story was that it persuaded the saleswoman to let the man through into the back of the store (where he was able to escape). Slowing Izumi down if she did follow on her own was just a bonus.
