I always thought it was weird that Kate reacted so badly when Emilico tried putting makeup on her face. If shadows weren’t compatible with makeup, that should be something natural to her. But now we know why.
It’s because she used to have a face.
I think she was also frustrated at the beginning from Emilico not being able to read her expression. Like the time Emilico thought she was smiling, but Kate actually had her back turned. That’s also something a “pure” shadow would theoretically be very used to.
The circumstances of her birth are so interesting. First, the fact that even morphs can form cocoons. Second, that removing the human from a cocoon seems to lead to them becoming a shadow? Maybe if the process completes, the morph/shadow is in control, and if it gets interrupted, the human is in control?
Third, of course, is the birth of a child that turned into a shadow. Pure shadows become stronger after 一体化. Does Kate basically have that strength from the beginning, because she basically is 一体化’ed from birth? Adult shadows can also show their faces. I assume Kate will eventually be able to do the same since they didn’t show her face in the flashback. That indicates to me that they’re holding that back for a big reveal.
The part about her mother becoming unresponsive and the pregnancy stretching out over 50 years is so interesting too. I wonder if they’re going to explain that eventually. It seems like it would be hard to find an explanation for it unless the characters find some shadow scientist/researcher or something.
Also, I bet shadow grandpa is the mastermind behind the initial incident. The morphs were forcing people into cocoons. I wonder if they all immediately became adult shadows? It seems like the 一体化 process isn’t foolproof, so maybe those all failed, and grandpa had to come up with this whole scheme of making the humans submit to it willingly as kids in order to get the process to succeed.
When the fan rooms were shown, I believe in volume 1, that led me to believe the shadows had lived there for a long time. But if Shadows House is the Mirror House taken over by Shadows, then that means they built all that up within that (short) time frame.
The background story of the morphs gave me the impression that they are sort of like animals and that they gain intelligence from contact with a human. But this week’s material, I feel, suggests otherwise, as they worked together to save one of their own.
This makes me wonder all the more about the morphs becoming the human-shadows and (usually) not retaining their memories of being a morph.
But if morphs have some capacity of intelligence, it’s more reasonable for Sherry to retain intelligence as a morph.
Oh, you are thinking that the morphs attacked because of the one that was made into a pet? That’s an interesting theory. I took the lack of intelligence of the morphs at face value, and assumed they had been manipulated somehow. Although I’m not sure where they all came from. I guess we don’t know where morphs come from in the first place. I doubt it’s from a mommy shadow and a daddy shadow loving each other very much
Actually, I wonder if 一体化’ed shadows can have children
Can’t wait to get to it after I finish work! See you guys in the discussion <3 Also, thank you @ChristopherFritz for making these threads. I’ll earnestly work on the vocab lists in return. If you ever need help making these threads or with anything, I’d be happy to.

Why does this volume have to be intriguing to the point I want to read it all in one sitting? (I’ve been good at following the club schedule, though. If I were still behind, this is where I’d be catching up, for sure.)
This time we got more insight into how Shadow House lures humans into its domain. But the really interesting part was the bombshell at the very end of the reading It’s going to be a long wait until next week. I was wondering just last week about where morphs come from, and it seems like we’re going to find out!
At first, I thought that this was “present Kate” speaking, since she’s referring to the manor as Shadow’s House, and aware of the concept of 一体化. However, the last bubble confused me since she says that “The answer to what I am must certainly be in that place.”. Can anyone clear this up?
I wonder who the people checking on the number of morphs are!!!
Really hard to stop reading this week again but I managed to stop hahaha. We are getting answers to a ton of stuff that Kate already knew. It kinda makes me wanna re-read to see how that may have affected her decisions in retrospect
I do! If it never ends it’ll inevitably become boring or bad. Based on the current pace of the story I can’t imagine it finishing before volume 20, but I do hope it ends at some point.
