キッチン Book Club Start Date TBD

[Edited]
It looks like a few people would be interested in reading along! Taking into account how long it would take to acquire the book, what date would you be interested in starting? As was suggested, we will follow along to the old Intermediate Book Club discussions as we read.

  • I don’t care
  • April 7th
  • April 14th
  • April 21st
  • Other - please explain

Hi!

I am very new to the wanikani community server, and I saw book clubs and I really wanted to join one! So far, I haven’t really seen anything recent that has started that I’d be interested in, so I’m wondering if people have an interest in reading the book キッチン by Yoshimoto Banana?

I really wanted to kind of step away from manga/light novel for a bit, and this book is highly recommended! So please let me know if anyone would be interested!

  • Yes, I’m interested in reading
  • No, I’m not interested in this book

Hey, welcome! I’ve been meaning to try this book at some point; my wife quite liked it when she read it in English a while back. I’m always juggling too many projects at once so I don’t really want to hard commit but put me down as a tentative yes if this gets off the ground? I’d try to join if I thought I could manage anyway!

Hi! キッチン is a beautiful book, we read it back in 2019 in the WK Intermediate book club (ah the nostalgia :face_holding_back_tears:) and I loved it.

If you decide to read it, please feel free to use the threads of the old book club - you can read them to find answers to questions you might have, and you can even still use them to discuss the book (so everything is in the same place for people who are reading even later than you are). It’s organized by the reading weeks we had back then, with one thread per week. You can find it here:

Enjoy!

Great idea @sftiern20 !

That would be so fun to have a reread group going through the original threads together at the same time. This is one of my top books wishlisted from previous IBC picks.

@NicoleIsEnough could you add a link to the JPDB deck for this book to the home thread resources list? (There is a link to a FloFlo word list that is broken)

I would love to read this book! I am a huge fan of Banana Yoshimoto and have read many of her works in English, but haven’t read any in Japanese!

Funny story, my partner wanted to get me a copy of Kitchen in Japanese for my birthday a couple years ago, but ended up getting me the Chinese version  Weirdly the cover of the Chinese version has both 厨房 and キッチン written on it? Anyway, I ended up getting the Japanese version eventually, and would love to join if this becomes a club!

Hi! Thank you so much for letting me know about this thread! This sounds a bit silly, but since I am new to the community server, I am not sure how to use old threads with a new book club? Or would we just join the old book club? Lol, if you have time, would you be able to explain a bit how that works?

Thank you!

There are various ways to do this. The easiest would be to make a post for it (well, you could just modify the home post here, or create a new one as you wish).

Normally the next thing to settle is a start date. Then typically you would add a schedule with links (going to the original threads that exist), and then each week post a link to the relevant thread. In that way, club members have a space (like here) to organise the rerun club, but for discussing the actual book, we discuss on those existing threads as we read.

If you want to learn about leading book clubs there is a lot of help here, or just copy what people do in other clubs
