Week 3 is here!!
I’m so excited to join my first WaniKani book club! (I hope it’s not too late to join!)
I just saw this thread last week and thought there would be no way to get the book in time but I was surprised by a trip to New York City last weekend. While I was there I went the Kinokuniya and thought if they had the book that I would pick it up and join—and lo, and behold, it was there!
I’m already caught up to week three and happily surprised at how much I’m able to read! I don’t quite get every detail, of course, but I’m largely understanding a majority of the conversation! Having the vocab list on my iPad next to me is also a huge help to check after I read the page on my own first, so thank you to everyone who contributed to that!
皆さん、頑張って!
The week 4 thread is up!
Now that we’re all a bit more used to getting through the reading, this is where we start ramping up the number of pages per week. So it may be a bit more of a challenge, but on the other hand it means we won’t have to wait as long to see what happens! And if you do get behind that’s perfectly fine, the resources will still be here for you when you get to it.
Of course keep asking questions and using the vocab sheet, we’ll work through it all together.
Week 5 is up! This finishes up chapter 1, which is also the longest chapter in the book.
Week 6 is here!!
The week 7 thread is here! Looking forward to discussing this with you all.
We’re at week 8 already! It’s the end of chapter 2!
Here’s the thread for week 9!
Is anyone watching this thread but not reading along? Wish there was a longer preview to check your interest levels on? Volume one of ゆびさきと恋々 is free to read until 8/14.
Or perhaps you’re beyond the ABBC stage and having trouble not reading ahead, and you’d like to check out something else by the same mangaka to fill your time?
The first three volumes of 日々蝶々 are free until 8/10 (not much more time!)
These are temporary freebies, so they will be available only until the aforementioned dates.
As a heads up, I’m on a trip so I won’t be able to work on the vocab list for next week like I usually do. So anyone who wants to work together to create that, please feel free to pitch in.
Or if @ChristopherFritz has the scripts to get us started on the final 3 weeks of vocab that would be great.
I’ll still be able to create the weekly threads as usual.
Here’s the thread for week 10!
Looks like suu Morishita are going to be at Kodansha House this year, if anyone wants to head to lower Manhattan this October and chat with them about your experience reading their work in Japanese

Here’s week 11!
The final week is here!
Whether you’re reading along now or seeing this later and catching up, it’s great to have you with us. Hope you’ve all enjoyed the book, it’s been a blast!
Will there be a spinoff club? I’m going to keep reading it regardless
Thank you so much to @josephsl for running the book club! It’s been so much fun reading with you all and pushing to stick with it!
This was my first fully completed manga (in Japanese)! Sometimes it felt like I was reading on pure vibes and other times it felt like I had a clear grasp on the dialog. But ultimately it was through everyone’s help each week that I was able to enjoy the story and clear up nuances and vagueness. So thank you to everyone else who stuck with it!
If you’re still working through it, don’t give up! 頑張って!
Awesome milestone! Make sure to bask in your accomplishment for a while
May you read many more volumes after this!
I wasn’t able to post much the last few weeks because life got in the way, but I’ve been reading along, and I have volume 2 already. I plan to read it next!
It sounds like there’s some good interest. I’m not really available to run a spinoff right now but if someone wants to take that on I’m sure it would be fun!
I’ve held off on replying in case anyone else is interested, but if no one is looking to run an offshoot, I can run it.
Along the lines of an offshoot club to continue reading,
sticking with the same series from the same author is a good way to keep the progress going. (But only if you found the first volume interesting enough to keep going.)
Otherwise, if you pick up a different manga series to read, don’t be surprised if it feels like you’re back to square one. That’s fairly normal, unless/until you’ve read enough different native materials.
