Chapter fifty-four’s title image is from “Futsuu” by CRYAMY
Chapter fifty-five’s is from “Fukkatsu no Jumon” by sumika
On page 41, they visit the Shibuya branch of Ishibashi. (I’m pretty sure that guitar-man-was-not-meant-to-know in the seventh panel is entirely fictional. Not gonna risk researching it in case my computer turns into a portal to the underworld. That said, it does kinda resemble an electric version of the Pikasso guitar.)
Page 43, they’re now at Cafe Flamingo, though according to Google it’s permanently closed. Page 44, the mentions of Tochigi and gyoza probably means they’re in Utsunomiya somewhere, but I couldn’t nail it down further with any specificity. There’s a few Hard Offs (Hards Off?) in Utsunomiya - like this one. And then the next page just straight-up says it’s Utsunomiya. I’ve really gotta learn to read the whole chapter before I start making notes…
Page 51, the manga that Nijika is holding is the first volume of Shojo Tsubaki.
Page 54, I honestly preferred Nijika’s original cover drawing better.
Page 55, I probably don’t need to point out that they’re playing Splatoon… or (presumably) one of the sequels.
when Nijika said じゃないっしょ I thought she meant it like 一緒に, but then after hearing her use it again in the same chapter, I realize she must be using it as a short for でしょう
I heard of the serpent eating its tail but I never knew its name, and a few days ago I was wondering why they called this splatoon boss horrorboros, so when I saw its name was uroboros I instantly made the connection and it blew my mind, and it even happened in a chapter where they play splatoon!
I thought maybe kuma was referring to the dark circles underneath their eyes and I think I vaguely remember hearing something like that before, but I was wondering what those black dots are doing next to the word? I guess they can count as dark spots too
oof I’m not used to the new format with hiding details, in my head I thought everything was formatted perfectly and I’m not sure what’s gotta happen but I’ll figure it out for next time, I hope that’s acceptable!
The WYSIWYG editor has inserted the word “open” into the Details boxes’ tags. You need to delete that (or else close the Details boxes before saving the post).
Yeah I don’t understand that change. A bit annoying for book clubs, now if someone is behind they have to close all the boxes manually while scrolling carefully to not see any spoilers??
Ah okay so “open” is the default but at least you can remove it, good to know.
It’s not that open is the default, it’s that it saves in whatever position you left it when you submitted the post. And since you need to have it open to write in it, you’d generally leave it open when you save it.
yeah I had it open to double check because I always thought the default was closed, fixed it and now I just gotta make sure the stuff lines up with the spoiler box better
Chapter fifty-six’s title image is from “Centimeter” by the peggies
Chapter fifty-seven’s doesn’t seem to be anything in particular.
Page 62, in case it’s hard to tell, Uemura reveals her pockets are full of Calorie Mate. Her t-shirt (presumably) comes from Kinugawa Onsen, though casual Googling doesn’t show any designs that exactly match this one.
Since it’s drums > bass > guitar > vocals order, does that mean Kita needs to go in twice? She’s definitely shown singing empty-handed over on page 74…
Yes, you would probably isolate her rhythm guitar section from her vocals I think, so she would probably go twice.
Great set of chapters, though there were bits of Nijika’s senpai’s drum explanation I didn’t quite get and probably wouldn’t unless I was a drummer (or until there’s a bit more of a audio explanation attached).
Looking forward to the slight diversion next week - been waiting for it for a while.
I heard about the melons with the T shaped stem being expensive but dang I didn’t know they were THAT expensive
moments I liked these 2 chapters
Ryou being like “nah it’s nothing i just wanted to be the first to press the button” made me lol, also I liked them reacting to their music
for the drum part Nijika’s groove is more important than matching the metronome click or beat or whatever, so if she were to make it revolve around her instead it would give it a more syncopated feel
Yah, 3万円 feels like a lot. From about ten seconds of Googling, I turned up this list on Rakuten, but the most expensive one showing is a “mere” 17k… though prices in the 4k-8k range seem typical. The record price is a pair of Yubari King melons that went for five million yen in 2019.
(I can buy them here for $5 AUD each = about 500-ish yen, so maybe I should take a bunch with me to Japan next time I visit and sell them on a street corner. Could even ship bean sprouts the other way - they’re about 25 yen per kilo over there, and $10 per kilo here.)
So, this week’s chapter is a backstory chapter. At 37 pages long, it’s around twice the length of any other week’s reading, but it’s also not yonkoma sooo… do your best? We’ve got our post-volume break next week, so you could always stretch the reading out if it’s too much. Worst case scenario, we could always just add another week’s break.
There’s no title image, as it were, in this one, and the only note I’d add in this one is a location I’ve already linked to in the past, but that was in a different context, so I’ll link it again: page 86, Rainy Bar refers to Daisy Bar. (I presume other locations in this chapter - like Seika’s band’s home live house, and the cafe they go to - are also real locations, but there’s not really enough contextual information to peg them down.)
Though I am amused by chibi-Nijika’s “cats are liquids” t-shirt on page 82.
One thing I don’t get, though: Why’s Dad such a non-entity? His role in this story is almost completely pointless. Where’s he gone in the present day? How come Nijika and Seika are living alone together?
I had the exact same question. I know manga time Kiara stuff loves to sideline (or completely ignore) the male characters but this seemed egregious.
Summary
Also I was under the impression both parents were killed in the car crash so that was a bit jarring. Could have made it an uncle or aunt taking care of nijika temporarily and it would have been fine.
That aside I cried twice reading this. Cannot wait to see how they adapt it, if they do a mini movie treatment I might die
