We watched season 1 as part of the Beginner Anime club. Note that unlike season 1, this thread will cover all the episodes of season 2 rather than a new thread each week.

Just a note for people confused about the timeline - it’s worth pointing out the events of season 2 happen concurrently with season 1.

So I’m a little late but got around to watching this week’s episodes.

Episode 1

Despite having first come across ピカピカ a few months ago now at this stage, my brain still associates it with Pikachu, sorry.

Side note: It only clicked with me that 一年生 is actually the first year of school. So used to American media where kindergarten is first, or Ireland’s school system where first class is the 3rd or 4th year of school (depending on if you count preschool as school).

Anyway, first we have Renge practing her 通う to school. It’s funny seeing the extreme’s of Japanese levels of child independence and on the other hand hearing about Americans getting CPS called on them for letting a 14 year old baby sit a 10 year old. I think we end up somewhere in the middle. Given in this episode Hikage is accompanying her, this would probably be considered ok here too, but we know from last season eventually Renge does this on her own.

Wow that bus going around the corner is such obvious CG. It really sticks out with how good the background are on this show.

Sorry れんげ, you’re not going to be れんげ殿 again.

More bad CG, this time a car.

She’s totally going to forget Renge has that phone.

Yup.

オートクチュール? Well, at least I’m not the only one to not understand Renge here.

This panning shot is like a visual novel schene, lol.

And Renge gets her 縦笛. By the end of the year she’ll be playing sandstorm on it :stuck_out_tongue:

And we get the 転校生 teased. Would be more of a mystery if this wasn’t season 2 :stuck_out_tongue:

Episode 2

I guess this is our chronologically first ニャンパス,

The ruler game is supposed to cast them as easily amused country kids, I think, but we did similar in my school when we were bored. Though there rules got more elaborate, ours were mostly about pushing others off the table.

DRAMATIC RULER COMBAT MUSIC.

After that dramatic music, you need to play “We Won the Case” as victory music.

Wait, that was half an episode of ruler combat.

Every little helps at JESCO?

Yeah, I’d be clueless at constellations too.

Waiting for the bottle cap chekhov’s gun to go off now they’re lost.

And the Komari-obsession is beginning (again).

Episode 1

I like the opening animation!! It’s cute, I like the part where they all walk in line together
Renge is so cute!! I liked again some of the more quiet moments focused on the beauty of the rural town hehe.
The “But nobodys ever fallen through the floor!!” line as they immediately after focus on the brother hahaha. I also loved the second long scene that shows the brother is the one who played the piano for the school song instead of singing, haha. It’s the little moments

Episode 2

Daang it was haha, but it was an inTENSE BATTLE
The music and dramatic poses were killing me :joy:

Haha! And it’s funny cause I was just thinking “Hmm, she hasn’t been senpai obssesed nearly as much, she didn’t even care that she was giving her a piggyback ride!!” And then cut to the plushie sketches :joy:

Episode 3

I was never good at whistling either.

I never liked those questions on English tests either, so sympathising with Natsumi there. I remember one of the poets on our english curriculum also famously did not like literally analysis by schools of her work. I could make enough crap to do ok in the tests, but I never believed any of it.

I paused on the english textbook. “Has basketball been played?” + “Of course, it has been done” is super unnatural lol. Now is that the illustrator’s english knowledge or representative of an actual textbook?

The rapid fire questions were a bit too rapid fire for me to keep up.

For a sequence of Renge’s antics, I actually got on pretty well with the scene with 姉ちゃん

I swear Komari got shorter for this walk to Renge’s house

Episode 4

I enjoyed the whole tero tero bouzo incident. Real higurashi vibes for Komari there lol.

Hold on a moment, I recognize what Renge is playing. Going to annoy now until I figure out where from. I checked 翼をください but that’s not it.

RIP ひらたいらさん

Honestly a very dialogue light but feels heavy episode, so not much to say from a Japanese practice perspective.

Two hours for a convenience store, ouch. I felt bad when I lived in the country side and it was 30 minutes by bicycle.

Ok, now that scene of the rainy forested hill reminds me of Eva scenes lol

I love how you could still see Renge playing with the water faucets in the background haha

I love the 駄菓子屋 everytime she appears! All the girls wearing her clothes was funny. They all looked like costumes more than outfits haha

The てるてる坊主 returns!

Ooh okonomiyaki! I wonder if those tips for making it actually work. There’s a homemade recipe for okonomiyaki I have tried before, and while it’s good, I don’t think it’s quite the real thing. So this made me want to find and try other recipes!

Episode 6

During episode 5 I added よりにもよって to anki. And then it showed up in one of the first few lines of this episode!! Natural SRS baby :sunglasses:

Poor Natsumi, she was trying so hard to think of conversation!! I was getting second hand embarrassment when she didn’t know what Hotaru was talking about :sob:

I had to look up a photo of a イモリ, and they’re so cute! :')

Fireflies!! I love fireflies! Or we call them lightning bugs, I think the name may depend on the region(?) I used to spend forever catching them and then letting them go when I was a kid

Episode 7

Hey, they’re jumping in the lake just like in the first season opening!

The 「ゆうえんち取りに行ってきます」note they left was great :joy: And when she said the bus place was far I was assuming like 2 hours by car or something haha! But it was walkable

Also you don’t have to, but @araigoshi I don’t mind if you want to have a break week or something for this anime if it would make it easier for you to catch up! Just an option :))

I am a little behind due to the busy part of the vacation, but now I’m in the quiet part this week so the plan is to catch up during the next few days.

Episode 7

I mean, water is still pretty hard to impact if you jump from too high, Natsumi clearly hasn’t watched the water tension mythbusters episodes.

We tried making a secret base one day when I was a kid, by which I mean we put a piece of wood over a bunch of overgrown bushes. It blew away like a week later. Anime kids have such unrealistic dedication lol.

Well, it makes a change from Komari being in the embarrassing childish situations I guess.

Oh, that’s my first time realising that even Hikage is shorter than Hotaru, lol.

Did Renge write the note?

Oh, so that’s where the name of the ヤンマ Pokemon comes from.

“We spent too much animating the river so we needed some long still shots”

Episode 8

I wonder if the time slip conversation is intended as a joke at the Repeat nature of this season.

I do love the shots to their brother being quietly good at everything in the background lol.

lol, little Komari and Natsumi are adorable.

This seems soon because I was late with last week’s post, but should be back to our regular schedule of having the post ready for Saturday now. Next week is the last week of Repeat. After that the next thing in release order is the movie Non Non Biyori Vacation, which has a run time of 71 minutes, or about 3 episodes worth. How do you want to handle the movie?

Natsumi just assuming she’s in trouble… probably valid.

Poor 兄ちゃん, hit by all those fishes.

Well that’s one way to fish.

My childhood also involved a lot of conflict over formal vs comfortable clothes lol.

Why do I feel like Komari is enjoying this as revenge?

There will be consequences for eating all the dango, I’m sure.

Yep, well at least Natsumi has Hikage to suffer with this time.

Episode 10

Renge, simultaneously the most and least intelligent character on this show.

駄菓子屋 and Renge probably have my favourite interactions in this show.

Careful not to throw Renge into the river with that practice location lol

Not much to say from a language perspective this time, but it was an adorable episode.

Renge’s ultimate dramatic gasp to the classic thumb trick was awesome :joy:
