どこから来ましたか How to answer

#1

Hello! I was wondering what is the best way to answer to this question, as you would answer in a textbook.

The thing is, I think it should be answered as メキシコから来ました、But I’m not really sure、Can you help me? What sounds more natural?

Regards!

That sounds ok, although repeating the verb sounds a bit stiff/textbook. You can also just be like メキシコからです。

Thanks man, I did see that way of answering in a YouTube video, and I’m thinking it is in fact more natural since when I enter my version of the answer in google translator it Doesn’t give me the meaning I’d expect、While your version does.

Thanks!

I don’t recommend google translate for… almost anything. But definitely not for deciding which sentences are more natural.

#5

Google translate assumes good input, so it will make the most sense it can out of anything.

The most natural answer is メキシコです, but your version is fine too. You could always use 出身 as well if you want to feel fancy.

Yes, I guess you’re right…

One cool trick my teacher taught me some day in yesteryear is when speaking with someone if they ask you a question just follow the pattern of the question.
Just make sure to drop the question words.

どこから来ました
ラララから来ました

何の映画を見るのが好きですか?
ラララを見るのが好き

It also can give you a base of how formal you should/shouldn’t be.
if they say
どこから聞いた
ラララから聞いた

etc etc.
