Spoiler Courtesy
Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.

  • Any potential spoiler for the current week’s watching need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.

  • Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).

  • Any information from later in the book than the current week’s watching (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.

Posting Advice

  • When asking for help, please mention the number of the episode and time of the section, and check before posting that your question hasn’t already been asked. As the threads get longer, it becomes more convenient to use the Search function, which is located in the upper right corner of the forum. It is the magnifying glass which is near your profile picture! The best way to search is usually to type part of the sentence you are confused about, and select “in this topic”. This will show you all posts within the current thread which has that string of text.

  • Be sure to join the conversation! It’s fun, and it’s what keeps these clubs lively! There’s no such thing as a stupid question! We are all learning here, and if the question has crossed your mind, there’s a very good chance it has crossed somebody else’s also! Asking and answering questions is a great learning opportunity for everyone involved, so never hesitate to do so!

If I do join in, this will be a rewatch for me.

I enjoyed it the first time through, watching with English subtitles.

Perhaps that will free me to attempt a second watching, with Japanese subtitles this time (if I am able to get that to work).

I have access to Crunchyroll.

I have changed The asb player link into a direct link for google chrome extensions.
So all you have to do now is add extensions and drag and drop the downloaded subtile file provided above on any streaming platform including youtube.
It’s a 2 step process.
This method felt more user friendly.
I don’t know if firefox also offers have firefox entension store.
But I need to check if the same applies for firefox.
I still don’t know how github works sorry. :bowing_man:
For anybody who wants the github link for asb player:

Thinking of joining in my first beginner anime club with this anime. Given that I have never watched an anime without english subtitles before, does anyone have any tips for how they went about this? I was thinking of watching with Japanese subs and then translating anything I don’t immediately understand?

If the streaming site you are using doesn’t have japanese subtitles you can download them and pair it with 10ten reader to look up words . Language reactor might also be useful. Happy watching :crabigator:

For this specific anime, one thing that you might have a little difficulty with compared to other anime of the same level is the amount of cooking specific vocab - ingredients, cookware, processes. Depending on your previous experience, you may have gaps here. You’ve two options depending on your preferences. Option 1 is to use tools like japanese subs (which are great as a transitional tool from English subs, but can be a crutch if your Japanese reading level is significantly ahead of your Japanese listening level) and Yomitan/Tenten/etc. I think if it’s your first time listening, you’ll need these tools, so don’t feel bad about using them.

But also, it’s also sometimes helpful for motivation to accept some ambiguity - for example, if you hear 豚肉 and you only catch or understand the 肉 part, sometimes it’s ok to just go “Ok, he’s talking about the meat” and keep the pace up, because you might find pausing every line of dialogue to go look up words to be too demotivating.
