Well I think that the decision to read two chapters at once will immediately pay off because not much new happens here, but it looks like it’s setting things up for 45.

Chapter 45
After what felt like a bit of a slow volume that picked up nicely at the end. I liked how they gave Kusutasu his freedom back by giving him wings where his legs didn’t work - the scenes of him enjoying his flying were nice. I’m a little big conflicted that the fire that doesn’t burn is too dangerous to release into the world, but it’s fine to give this child the power of flight…
翼竜 - I read this word as “winged dragon” which made perfect sense in context. But I decided to look it up as I wasn’t sure how to read it - turns out it means pterosaur!
The end of chapter 45 - exciting to meet a new mysterious character. Happy to ignore the magical laws and heal the human body. And she has a really striking look!
The bit after chapter 45 - liked the idea of the ancient dresses stored in little boxes. I could do with something similar for storing my old books and CDs!

Finally the つばあり帽子 have revealed their ultimate gambit:

It’s an interesting turn of events I think, Dagda is going to feel betrayed because koco and tata lied about magic not being able to heal bodies and he may turn against them while learning magic of his own.
I had the same reaction. That would be like giving him a motorcycle, arguably even more dangerous. I also thought “wow if those brigands thought the chair was worth stealing, wait until they see this!”
I find it weird that K-dog and especially Oru let them work on these projects seemingly without any supervision. Especially since tata is not even really meant to do magic at this point, right? He’s not a 弟子 AFAIK.

That came up in the current IBC. Apparently it’s also commonly used to mean “winged dragon” in the fantasy sense.

Ch 44-45
Flying seems very normalized in this world, but you’re right that it’s a weird contrast with the non-burning fire. I didn’t comment about it at the time, but given how many potentially dangerous magical things and customs we’ve seen so far, K-dog and Oru’s insistence that the non-burning fire isn’t fit for market really struck me as weird.
Do you think she is a つばあり帽子 or have we just met a third faction that’s like brimmed hats without brims? If it’s the latter, half the atelier crew should be instant sympathizers.
Did anyone recognize if the master she keeps talking to is someone we’ve already heard of? I’m not sure the name should ring a bell, because the names are all so weird.
Assuming you mean Kustas, then yeah, definitely.

I think she does have a brim, look at the very last page she appears in. She can use her ribbon thingies to create a brim on demand. She’s hiding her power level.
I blame the author for rolling dice on the katakana table every time she needs to come up with a name. I firmly believe that an editor forced her to name the heroine ココ for marketing reasons, her original name must have been コーッコーエル or some bullshit.

I thought this panel was fun too.
Also it felt fine for me to read 2 chapters. But I’m cheating, I read Bocchi right before on purpose, so this one feels super easy haha

Hm I have to admit not really :X I like it more when they try to manipule or kidnap Koko, or when K-dog is full-on dark side. Now sure what does that say about me :x

Yes I liked that panel too. I wonder if the author plans this when writing the dialogue or if it just chance? Interesting as well that while each column starts with the same kanji, the reading is not the same each time the kanji appears.
Good question! My initial reaction was that this was a new group. Perhaps that is because she is a pointy hat but not behaving like a pointy hat (by breaking the rules); and perhaps because she is breaking the rules but not behaving like a brim hat (she is randomly helping people rather than going around doing bad things). Of course the helping people could be part of a dastardly plot to cause trouble for Koko and the gang by healing Kusutasu and creating some sort of discord. Except Koko and Tata have been so kind to Kusutasu is hard to imagine him turning on them.

If you look at the last page featuring her I really feel that the author draws attention to the ribbons taking the aspect of a witch’s hat brim so there’s really no doubt I’m my mind unless I’m completely misreading this.

Your 盗 example may be a coincidence given that they’re different words but when it’s the same word related again and again it has to be purposeful IMO.

Well different words but still pretty related. The stealers* stole the stolen goods!(* alright, should be thieves in real english, works better in French, les voleurs ont volé les bien volés!)

Yeah I was more that the kanji readings are different, as such it feels more coincidental to me, but maybe it would read that way for a native.
I do find these things interesting though, how sometimes a sentence can feel pleonasmistic in a language but not another (like your “the thieves steal” versus “les voleurs volent”).
I wonder if there’s such a thing as a “kanji pleonasm” in Japanese, when you repeat the same kanji for the same meaning despite different pronunciations. I wonder if some authors would try to avoid that. So much depth…
