I did think we were being introduced to a new character for half the chapter. Though I think that was the aim.

Same, but I’m used to it at this point. These manga are a full-on assault on my fragile heterosexuality.
Oh the hand signal is a real thing, I didn’t know:
I thought it was weird that it was given so much emphasis despite not playing any role in the story, I wondered if it was a setup for something but I guess it may just be the author making a PSA.

Great chapter. Love how difficult it is to decide on the morality of Kustas’s actions. The pointy hats see him as 悪人 using forbidden magic and doing unspeakable things. He just sees himself as someone who is trying to help people and fight the established order.
Interesting choice for the pointy hat guy now. With that leech toxin in his system his bleeding is not going to stop - he’s going to have the choice between dying or forbidden magic…
Or someone else is going to make the choice for him.
This chapter again highlights what has irked me about Kustas’ turn of character since the beginning; it always felt jarring to me.
I can understand that he feels betrayed, but he didn’t strike me as a character who is prone to violence, and now he lashes out at every turn.
Also, his magic skills seem too advanced for the short time he has been with Ininia. Unless I missed that there was a longer time skip since she picked him up and confronting Koko and Taata at the festival, it could not have been more than a couple of days, and yet he seems at least as skilled with drawing magic circles as Koko, who must have by now spent at least several months at the atelier.
We could assume that he only knows the one “time reset” circle, but the circles he drew on those unfortunate people show variations that would suggest more knowledge than just copying.
Maybe there is some forbidden magic knowledge implantation going on? I mean, if you can delete memories…
Yes and no. I don’t think we really knew him before the riverbank collapse. At the time it showed he was impulsive but that’s it. But even before he met Ininia, he was lashing out verbally at Coco and Tata.
I don’t mind Kustas’ characterization. He’s always been immature and impulsive, with this “mischievous street urchin” vibe. He’s always been poor and powerless, now he gets actual power and it gets to his head.
Also he did nothing wrong based kustas unproblematic fave with his tsubaari waifu.
That I agree with.

As long as there‘s no sign that these circles actually do different stuff, I‘ll keep on believing that it’s the same circle and the differences are just because the mangaka found it hard to replicate it in different sizes and on differently shaped body parts. So far, we‘ve hardly seen Kustas draw anything else than time turner circles, so he seems like one trick pony. I can’t even remember if we’ve ever seen him use drawn magic in combat. He always seems to use his magic legs for that.
As for his characterization, I don’t necessarily like him, but I don’t think his characterization is inconsistent, for reasons others have already mentioned.
Lol - that would have been a neat ending. Although I might be demanding my money back for the second half of this volume…

I’m really struggling to figure out what exactly is going on pages 126-127.
Koco wants to help/protect kustas, rurushi’s resolve appears to waver so Beldarut takes the matters into his own hands and tries to put a stop to the heresy. I think.
I thought he created some sort of spell to trap Koko because he doesn’t like what she is doing elsewhere in her smoke sculpture form - looks a bit like wrapping her up in a blanket, but presumably some sort of magical containment/restriction. But then she breaks almost immediately out of it. Rather to Beldarut’s surprise as he thought all her efforts were going into working on her smoke sculpture.
Honestly it’s the rest of the chapter that I don’t quite understand:
So the time travel magic is related to the memory wipe magic so it’s ok? What? Why?
The memory wipe magic was established as a very specific exception with a very specific purpose at the start, obviously not all time travel spells are acceptable as a result.
I mean if they were, are we truly to believe that coko is the first one too realize that “damn being able to rewind time is pretty powerful actually, maybe we could use that often if it’s technically allowed”.
I agree - the argument that the turning back the body clock is an extension of the memory wipe is certainly 屁理屈. But then the whole order the magical society is based on feels rather full of holes. Ok to wipe someone’s memory but not to heal a child’s legs so they can walk. I like how Koko is challenging the establishment!
This truly says a lot about our funny mage hat society
