I don’t like this, I’m already using plenty of time learning magical symbols that represent words (I think the term for those I’m talking about is kanji?), don’t make me learn new symbols

Wow, loving how the plot is unfolding, I’ve seen plenty of heroes go head in into big tests and challenges, but wasn’t expecting that Koko would be thrown into the big-test-that-she’s-not-supposed-to-take-or-she’ll-die! I love all characters so far but I find Agathe to be the most interesting one

If you look at the one Agathe is drawing, the 紋 looks different from all of those, so I don’t think it’s meant to be exhaustive or super important.

I don’t understand Alyra’s second comment here
Alyra is saying
大事な 手がかりだ… 手元に置きたくも なるよな
It’s an important clue. You want to keep it close (???)
And then Kifuri says no, its not like that. And on the next page is explaining that she’s not even his pupil yet.
I don’t really understand what Alyra is getting at and why the discussion goes where it does. Does she mean that’s why Kifuri is taking on Koko, or rather, Koko should have come to this meeting (and then he explains why she couldn’t come)?

I understood it as in, Qifrey is after the magic book, and Koko can maybe help him bring him to it. And maybe his looking for the book as to do with this つばあり帽 group, that seem to not be their friends. So that’s why in theory he wants to keep her close.
Then he explains that she is not even officially his pupil yet, since she hasn’t taken the test, and that he doesn’t want her to take this upcoming test because it’s too hard, she would probably die.

Considering Qifrey immediately draws a 矢 (that we don’t see) with the effect of “make a flower”, then yeah I’d say it’s not exhausive. 
Flying Witch also has symbols that represent the elements, and they keep showing up in various magical designs, so it’s more of an “oh, that’s clever” thing rather than a “you have to memorise this or you’ll never be able to follow along” thing.

I thought coko was drawing the same water thing K-dog did for the flower, she just messed it up. Admittedly that doesn’t explain how you go from “water column” to a flower, but I don’t think we’re meant to analyze it to that level of detail.

Agreed. I think we don’t have to go to magic cram school here, if something is important to the plot, it’ll probably get explained with practical examples. Like in this chapter, we learned that the water was directed to the side with some amount of force because one of the T-shapes in the 矢 was much longer than the others. We could now start to speculate how that principle could be adapted to create water flowers, but if it ever becomes important, no doubt there’s going to be a more detailled explanation. ね、 先生 ?
And we also know that the 紋 Koko learned in her first lesson aren’t all there are, because none of them could have been used to turn stuff to stone or create the flower petals Kifuri used last chapter. The triangle shapes in the sample circle on p. 113 havent been explained yet, either.

He didn’t create the petals, he just opened the window to a field of flowers that was equipped with a drama-powered wind.
We also saw a large number of different spells back in chapter one, including a glimpse of the far more complex one powering the flying chariot, which appears to include subordinate 陣 (each with their own 紋 and 矢) functioning as 紋 (or maybe 矢, given their positions) within the spell.
Though that one noticeably changes in design between pages 38 and 39, so it’s not entirely clear how consistent the system is…

Thanks! Oops, I didn’t write that very well. I have a similar understanding of the overall arc, but the transition doesn’t make sense, so I feel like I’m missing something. The specific exchange/transition I don’t get is after Alyra says 手元に置きたくも なるよな (which makes sense in the above arc you described), why does Qifrey say no it’s not like that

The panel is set up as if she’s saying something she assumes, and then Qifrey says, no it’s not like that and clarifies on the next page. So now I’m wondering if maybe she was implying that Koko is actually one of the つばあり帽 and that’s why he wants to keep her close. And that’s what he’s disagreeing with, like - whoa, she isn’t even a pupil yet much less a fully fledged magician who can willfully do dark magic. I guess Alyra doesn’t know the full details like the book etc

Thoughts about Agathe
Alright I understand why she’s frustrated, because Coco broke a major rule and not only does she not get punished, she gets rewarded, but Agathe’s resentment is her own problem to deal with.

My impression was that Kefir counters Alyra’s assumption that he’s only letting Koko live with him to use her as a clue and that he’s implying that he seriously intends to treat her as his student and properly teach her instead. Might be wrong, though. I didn’t notice during my first read, but now that you mentioned it, it does seem that there’s something ambigous about this conversation. Speaking of which
Is Alyra teasing him about being a “problem child” here? If so, how mysterious. I wonder what that is about.

I thought maybe it was the third meaning (priceless), and the させる turns it into something like “highly prized” or treasured. Because so far, the only magical item we’ve seen in muggle hands was the carriage, and that must have been expensive since the rich-looking ladies had to borrow it from their father, implying that even a family as rich as theirs can afford only one.

I agree - I interpreted it as “valuable” for the same reasons and it interfaces with the earlier comments about “magic that even non magic users can use”
- I want to say ‘muggles’ because it’s actually a useful phrase in this context, but it gives me the screaming heebie jeebies to use these days

There was the self cleaning spring! That seemed to be a common use thing, and when Koko talks about magic, she talks about it being generally useful, so although there seem to be some luxury elements, a lot of magic seems common place.
that makes the most sense to me as well, especially with this being a comment in the book after the definition when Koko is looking up 魔法器. So I took it as:
“due to being magic that can be invoked by “the unaware” (thanks @Belthazar ), [魔法器] are found useful throughout the world”
