It looks to me like they’re coming up with excuses (‘some business came up so we had to leave early’), but why didn’t they just say ‘we were there but you were asleep’ from the beginning? :thinking:

If they didn’t want to embarras him, they could’ve confessed that they were late and that’s why he missed them. But I’m happy that I seem to have understood the Japanese correctly, at least!
