おじさまと猫 (Ojisama to Neko) Chapter 1 Discussion

Please be forward!! This explanation is incredible and is SO much easier to wrap my head around! Thank you for sharing this

First of all, thank you for starting a chapter 1 discussion thread! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

So happy that we’re off to such a great start! :muscle:

Anyone else wonder about the way this sentence is constructed:

私は猫である (my direct translation would be something like: as for me, cat there is)

I haven’t seen someone explain “what/who” they are in this way before. Also, why ある and not いる? Does anyone know? Doesn’t feel like a very natural sentence to me?

It’s probably a reference to the novel, I am a cat/吾輩は貓である. The cat is that story is very full of himself, hence the weird pronoun use. ふくまる lacks confidence, so that’s probably why it’s the more neutral 私.

Ah, interesting! Thank you!

This is so cute! Thanks for starting the book club, @Sarabrina!

Thanks for starting the week 1 thread!

Could you please put a link to the home thread in this first post? That will make it easier to navigate the club as we go along.

I’m having a hard time figuring out what the very last sentence (うちの子におなり…) is supposed to say.

If “うちの子” translates to “my son” and “おなり” to “visiting”, does it mean “Visiting my son?” Or is it something completely different?

It means (according to the translation on Bilingual Manga): “please be my child”

That’s so sweet :sob:

Since it’s translated as “please be my child” is the form being used “to become” (になる)? In which case I don’t get why there is an お there. For politeness?

I can’t believe such a short sentence is giving me the most trouble

Yes, exactly! おなりください would be the full polite form of なってください (please become…).
I interpreted this as he’s an older, gentlemanly type, so he speaks in (shortened)keigo even when he’s being casual

である is the uncontracted plain form of です (であります). Not sure why this was chosen, other than the reference @CDR-Strawberry pointed out.

I also thought that it was written this way to show that two different people are speaking. Maybe the かわいい〜 one might be a child and the 可愛い one a parent?

I love the cat dialect, too. :heart_eyes_cat: Can give reading beginners a headache, though. :confounded:

Finishing chapter one has made me so excited to reread this manga!!! It’s so dang cute! :sob: I need an entire genre of manga dedicated to old guys doing cute things…

I’m pretty sure such a genre exists lol. When I visit my local bookstore, I could send you titles that seem to fit if you want? (I don’t visit the bookstore very often though).

Doesn’t every manga shop have an OGDCT section? It should be right next to the CGDCT section.

~である has it is own entry on bunpro if you are interested - Bunpro ~である

Thank you! I’ll check it out!

I’m behind but just finished this chapter. I added ブッサイク to the spreadsheet. I actually had a hard time looking this up too.

After one chapter, I’m already excited for the rest though. It’s proving a bit challenging so far but thoroughly worth it for the cuteness.

Chapter 2 Discussion Thread is up!
