おじさまと猫 Chapter 1 Discussion Book Club I haven’t started one of these threads before, so this post will definitely get some major edits. So far we have a vocab sheet . Shoutout to @Sarabrina for starting this book club and @frayderike for starting us off with such a lovely vocab sheet. Original Cl…

CDR-Strawberry: This makes me want to read both versions at the same time, that’s so cute! Do it! Read a page of the original first to see how many kanji you can recognize (without furigana to distract you), then read the same page in the book. Here’s the first four chapters, and there’s a…

[image] Sarabrina: 私は猫である It’s probably a reference to the novel, I am a cat/吾輩は貓である . The cat is that story is very full of himself, hence the weird pronoun use. ふくまる lacks confidence, so that’s probably why it’s the more neutral 私.

Ah, interesting! Thank you!

This is so cute! Thanks for starting the book club, @Sarabrina !

Thanks for starting the week 1 thread! Could you please put a link to the home thread in this first post? That will make it easier to navigate the club as we go along.

It means (according to the translation on Bilingual Manga): “please be my child”

That’s so sweet :sob: Since it’s translated as “please be my child” is the form being used “to become” (になる)? In which case I don’t get why there is an お there. For politeness? I can’t believe such a short sentence is giving me the most trouble

[image] momoni: For politeness? Yes, exactly! おなりください would be the full polite form of なってください (please become…). I interpreted this as he’s an older, gentlemanly type, so he speaks in (shortened)keigo even when he’s being casual

[image] Sarabrina: 私は猫であるである is the uncontracted plain form of です (であります). Not sure why this was chosen, other than the reference @CDR-Strawberry pointed out.

[image] ChristopherFritz: [image] tomwamt: odd considering there’s a かわいい just the panel before. [/quote] I kind of feel the 「かわいい〜」 is being said in a cutesy young lady voice, and the kanji would take away from the cutesy flow. When referring to our main character cat, she’s probably spe…
