From the moment I sat down in front of the manga 雑誌 I was going 100%集中 and kept reading, and reading, and reading, and reading.
My mind is still between languages so it’ll take a bit for me to make a proper tally, but I’m finishing my marathon at 10 hours, 12 minutes, 997 pages read. Too bad I didn’t make it to 1000, but I most likely will do it after the marathon, just to catch up
I need to rest up and collect my thoughts and use the bathroom and think on the series I’ve read and forget the Japanese I know and remember English that I know and aaaa I haven’t summoned my hypoactive hyperattentive ADHD in a long time now
I’m gonna miss my Japanese when I inevitably forget it in an hour xddd
Proper post to sum up the marathon coming as soon as I remember I have a head and make all sorts of checkups on it xddd
Phew this VN is hard to put down! Decided to make myself stop reading after “only” 8 hours (minus the 5min breaks here and there, I’ll count it as 7 hours, and 47k char), because I have much life duties tomorrow and it’s not like I can finish today anyway (I’m only about halfway through I think), but otherwise I feel like I could have kept going for hours for sure! Felt so good. Was a lot of fun to allow myself to spend that much time on my favorite hobby, thanks @taiyousea for giving us that good excuse

Because I’m a sucker for punishment I decided to do a little test this afternoon and try ふしぎ駄菓子屋 銭天堂 1 after having seen the book club for it and a few recommendations of it being a good first “novel”. That kicked my butt for 20 mins, most of which was the first page which I think was a prologue and honestly I didn’t have a clue. The first page of chapter 1 was actually muuuuch more doable (with lookups I could confidently understand the story), but I had run out of steam by then. 2 pages in 20 mins… 
one to beat next time.

Reflections: definitely the most time I’ve spent reading Japanese in a 24hr period! But it also feels like for anything beyond the very basic, I just do not have the vocab and need to heavily rely on dictionaries. It’s making me wonder whether I need to adjust my balance of forcing words into my brain with SRS vs consuming content. Hmmm. A Q for another day.
Huge thanks to @taiyousea for hosting! And I have really enjoyed reading about how you have all spent your time - provides lots of inspiration for future 
(not to mention the food and drink - provides a different sort of inspiration…). One day I want to read an actual novel, only needing to look up the occasional word. I can dream. Happy summer solstice all 
Awesome job!! 10 minutes per page seems right, I was definitely reading it that slowly (or slower 
) at the start. After all, reading is more like ‘deciphering’ in the beginning stages. Keep it up!!
If you have the patience you can prepare the text you will read in the SRS to have exposure to the vocab before. That way you’re always sure to learn vocab you will use 
Of course, now my readathon time is done, I’m left to catch up on things I’ve neglected in that time:

Thanks Yandros, good suggestion - I think I probably need a wider base vocab first, but at in a few months it might be worth experimenting with this approach!
Today’s reading session was faster than yesterday. I did 42 pages in about an hour. Still from おチビがうちにやってきた book 3. But now I’ve officially finished this children’s book I’ve been neglecting for a year. I don’t dislike it, it feels like an easy ish read but it still has a decent amount of kanji despite being for children. I think I want to keep this series around as a low effort read when I’m not trying bookworm or something harder.
They have Chinatsu decide what house she wants to stay at and she says she wants to stay at Monika’s house but she wants Misaki to come too. Momoka mentions that Chinatsu never stops talking about chaki chan and wants to know who that is, when she finds out it’s Misaki she decides that Chinatsu should keep being raised by Misaki.
They have a birthday party for Chinatsu turning 3 in a sunflower field because Momoka promised Chiharu (Chinatsu’s mom) to go there someday and never got around to it before she died. Misaki makes clothes for the stuffed bunny with four leaf clover buttons like the clover from the camp book.
Momoka sends them all special designer clothes in yellow green and blue like a field of sunflowers under a blue sky. Chinatsu has one more vision of the future with lots of friends.

So did you hit your goals?
Nope, I missed the goals of a 24-hour marathon by about 30-35 hours considering just the physical things I put in the picture and about 50-100 hours if talking about the digital things I put images of

I am really bad at goals, disregard my future attempts at goals xddd
State of yuri manga in 2025
Through the course of the marathon I had a great exposure to a broad range of yuri manga, and my conclusion is that
I really think it’s high time to invent a subgenre from yuri manga that doesn’t involve cute girls doing cute things, schoolgirls falling for one another (or their teachers) and isekai. I read a few nice things, probably カナリアは綺羅星の夢をみる is the one that grew on me the most because the tenth chapter was great, but I’m really feeling ill at the amount of manga that’s basically cute girls screaming out expressions like 大丈夫！！！ or 貴方。。。
Those are two expressions I found out much, much more than I expected to find in the reading today xddd
I really appreciate the mission of コミック百合姫 and you can see that the state of yuri is getting better over time, I do think that the comics in the July issue have been better than the ones in February issue as well, I will keep on supporting them!
Reading a 1000 pages over one marathon
I’m just about to hit level 100 on WaniKani, so I might be a little biased, but I was surprised at how little the mangas I’ve read used grammar beyond N3 level (including the honorifics ones) and WaniKani kanjis beyond level 30 (though there have been a bit more difficult, they almost always had furigana inside of it)
It doesn’t mean that I understood everything smoothly though.
One of the things I’ve given myself a goal of was to try not to think in English while reading at all: at my current level of Japanese it means that I get to miss a lot of story and a lot of story doesn’t stick with me even if I understood it, but the endgame of learning languages is not to interpret things between languages, but build connections in the target language instead.
By “reading” for me I assumed vocalizing words and sentences in my own head - if I couldn’t read the kanji in a second, I would just move on without having read the kanji. That happened way less often than I expected though.
At the very beginning, I found myself often being able to read kanji but not being able to tell what it meant - I have a feeling that over time the same kanji simply started appearing in my head more often and I could read the same sentences easier, even if I didn’t stop at them the first time to try to remember them.
And also, I didn’t wait for my cognition to pick up the meanings of the kanji, so a lot of times I went on ahead without having understood the sentence yet, and sometimes it would understand itself later, sometimes it never would. I’m learning to think in Japanese, not in English xdd
Marathon tips & tricks
As it turns out, I made a few silly things over the course of the marathon I’d like to reconsider before the next one xddd
- Having an hour+ long block of reviews in the middle, for the future I need to whittle down the reviews as much as possible before the marathon xddd
- Stopping the timer to write the posts in the middle, you will have the time later, keep reading for as long as you have time xddd
- Don’t schedule hanging out with friends over the course of the marathon xddd
Or I don’t know, maybe that one did help to get my head off of things xddd

I distinctly remember someone in Mitrac’s study log saying that reading a lot of easy material is the key to becoming better at Japanese, I can’t find your post now, but thank you to the one who said it - please show yourself! You were right xddd

my philosophy towards japanese language changed completely since level 60, i finally have life outside of japanese, would recommend xdddd

If you look at the top of the results table, the bolded bit shows the deadline adjusted to your timezone. If you’ve started now you’ll be fine.
I’ve recently just completed Bunpro’s N2 grammar and there is stuff I’ve studied recently on Bunpro that I’ve run into this readathon and noticed “Oh yeah, that’s what that is”. And I think it helps to know these points for production reasons. But a lot of the N2/N1 grammar points in Bunpro are less “foundational grammar patterns” and more “commonly used phrases”. And the thing with a lot of these phrases when reading is you can often take their constituent words and come up with a pretty good approximation of the meaning without knowing anything about the “grammar point” and continue on reading.
The other side is “this is the formal alternative to XYZ” stuff, and yeah, manga is rarely going to use that except for the occasional sage in a fantasy world or like a mayor showing up in a slice of life manga. You see it a bit more in novels though.
2nd update
So, I haven’t been reading much lately, but I have been studying grammar. Last time I was using readers, level 1 was comfortable and level 2 was challenging. Today, I thought I’d aim higher. I quickly read a couple of level 3 stories, and I think I’ll be able to read level 4 if I look some stuff up. Then, I read the first chapter of Yotsuba (50 pages) in just 50 minutes. I had no idea that I’d progressed so much. I think that I’m going to keep focusing on grammar.
So far, I’ve read 78 pages in 76 minutes.

I'm happy with what I was able to accomplish! I did read quite a bit, but the times I sacrificed reading time, it was to spend time with my family, so I don't regret that :)) I also hit all of my goals!! I read some from all my current books, finished a manga volume (and started another!), beat last readathons time by an hour and a half!!
I really enjoyed the challenge for the second time, thank you taiyousea for hosting! And if anything this has just made me want to read my current books even more, so I hope to keep up with this good momentum! Great job to anyone who finished, and keep going! to anyone whose 24 hours aren’t up
