☀️ 2025 Summer Solstice 24-hour Readathon

Done! I just finished NO. 6 〔ナンバーシックス〕#1 | L32, with 165 pages read in 6 hours and 42 minutes! Which comes out to about two and a half minutes per page, if my math’s right. I don’t normally track pages/minute, so I have no idea where that falls in the grand scheme of things for me, but I’m quite happy!

And most exciting/concerning of all, I feel like I’ve still got energy to read and read, haha. I might put in another 30-40 minutes or so with a manga to finish up the day, but after that I’ve got friend plans, so this all works out very nicely.

Just remembered I needed to do my JP listening for the day, so I’ll unwind with that and call my readathon done with this!

And that’s my second in progress item finished out as I read the end of volume 1 of textbook boys:

Interesting encounter: That’s a weird looking kanji

welp think im done… have to aggregate all the stats later when I’m not exhausted

had to use this one cuz too perfect for brain melt

for last bit went back and started ch6 of 僕が夫に出会うまで, got through one story. But not sure if it’s tired, slow, or whatever but seems like my expected reading speed has returned to expected slow lame numbers LOL…but 45 min 2200 char puts me back around ~3000 char/hr which is typical.

Honestly starting to think this won’t ever get faster… just a slow reader by nature… throw in japanese and im doomed!!!

anyways…I’ll aggregate numbers later…need some lunch and a mental reset for now…

over all assuming my spreadsheet is correct (unchecked at the moment) ended up with almost 7 hours (manga 262 pages / shousetu 7600 char) which is way more than I thought I’d come close to… will check everything and aggregate into something pretty later today or tomorrow…

TTFN!!! good luck everyone

Accidentally posted this as a reply to another participant and am now trying to edit it enough so that I can repost.

Now completed: Chap. 39 of よつばと!Reading these volumes from cover to cover without looking anything up is such a joy. (Ok, to be honest, I have looked up 2 words in these first 5 chapters, because they came up over and over: 自由研究 and 配達.) The process of rereading with the dictionary is also satisfying, but this first stage of just tearing through the volume and absorbing the story while learning a new word here and there is so fun.

:bookmark: Goals post // Update 4

Chapter 6: 30% → 38%. Time 1h 4 min.
Chapter 7: 38% → 44%. Time 31 min.
Total 4h 52 min.

It’s getting late here now. I started dozing off at the end so I think that’s it for today. It’s 23:30  I have until 16:00 tomorrow. I have faith :eyes: :sparkles:

I just have to say I’m enjoying this book a lot. I’m glad I chose this one for the readathon.

After Flying Witch and Tensura, Yu Yu Hakusho is surprisingly harder. Maybe because it goes heavy on the setup? Or the everpresent slang and slurring of words haha.

I’m not sure how far I’ll get in the series, as I liked the detective theme it started with, and don’t care for tournament arcs and didn’t like them in the anime but first volume is great. The art is pretty good as well in the colored version.

Reading update

Started with ガイコツ書店員 本田さん and made it to chapter 5. I haven’t checked the page number yet but I’m close to being halfway through, so I’d guess I’ve read somewhere around 70 pages.

It’s not an easy read for my level and I had to do plenty of lookups already. I can say that it’s whacky indeed in its first 3 chapters with ever so slightly more serious explanations about the daily book store work procedure in chapter 4 and the never-ending wave of incoming boxes filled with books, manga and bonus items that the staff has to handle.

After chapter 4, I wanted a break from all the deciphering, so I switched to ふたりのライオンwhich was also challenging but much more manageable with less specific vocabulary. I read through the whole volume and its 250-ish pages with several sessions and breaks in-between.

Found it okay overall but it felt a bit too convoluted at times and had at least one other aspect that bothered me a little. Also, it did feature a cat, thus I’d like to pay the cat-tax:

So far, I’ve read for roughly 4 hours and 30 minutes but I will call it a day now because it’s getting quite late. I still have some hours left tomorrow and will try to finish the remaining 1 1/2 volumes of Honda-san and afterwards take a look everyone’s updates again.

Thank you, soggyboy! :smiling_face_with_tear: It’s nice to see you and everyone else too!

Chapter 40 of よつばと! is done. This one made me sad! Also, terrified for Yotsuba’s safety. At the same time, I laughed out loud several times. Will take a break for dinner. On track to finish the volume before bed!

Bed time update

My eyes may or may not be on fire. On one hand, bed late, unlikely to wake before half 6. On other hand, HEAT and BIRDS like to make themselves known at silly o’clock in the morning. Even if i do wake early enough, no promised of being in any state to or wanting to read anything else

Okey dokey here we go. Goals

I started on the train home from today’s activities (beach! Two sets of close friends and their respective children. Lovely day. Tired now. :beach_with_umbrella: )

Progress: I got through chapters 16-19 of Akiko’s American Foreign Exchange on Satori. I had found this series a bit… dull to begin with. I thought I was going to give up on it yesterday at chapter 14 until I flipped it from “easier” to “harder” and then the language challenge ramped up enough to counteract the light touch story. At some point I will head back to the satori appreciation thread to do some story reviews (which I found v helpful as I’ve been picking what to read from their options).

So far: 48 mins of reading, 4 chapters of satori (I think I’m going to track these as pages, which is probably what they’re closest to, unless anyone has other suggestions).

Tomorrow I have until 8.30pm - more satori, some しろくまカフェ, and maybe try a page or two of a “real” book as a bit of a litmus test (thinking of Soggy’s benchmark and what I will enjoy looking back on in a year)

おやすみ!

I only read 131 pages of manga magazines until now. Today it was too hot I wanted to read Bakemonogatari manga, Kurokami manga and the No Game No Life books but didn’t even manage to start any of them.

Gooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooood MORNING!

It’s readathon time! I woke up bright and early, so it’s not quite getting hot yet. It’ll hit about 35 later today though.

Quick background - In my first one, Winter readathon I was very early in my reading process, about 2 months in to properly committing to it every day. I finished manga number 3/4, and novel number 2. Spring readathon I was being held hostage in international transit. I made massive progress between those first two and it really felt like an amazing springboard for my early proper reading journey. Similarly, Spring readathon served as a perfect end to my first year in Japan, and also started the only proper break from Japanese I’ve taken in over a year. Now, since then, I’ve read a pretty ridiculous amount of stuff. Time to see where I’m at and how much I can do in a day!

My plans for today are still not set completely, and won’t be at any point. Going to play it by ear, and use the challenge to push myself to keep going. I do have a few things I 100% want to read (listed below), and more generally I want to get through more manga than usual today, because I’ve been slacking with it recently. Beyond that, 自由, 自由…

First up: finishing novel 1. I have 40 pages left of this which’ll take me about 1.5 hours of actual reading time. See you when it’s done, hopefully!

Check-in time! I took a break from reading to eat dinner

I read 15 pages お探し物は図書室まで for an hour
44 pages of vol 1 of 映像研には手を出すな! for 55 minutes

映像研 is actually more challenging than I thought it would be! I think it’s more difficult than お探し物, which is a novel haha

Ooh ooh, also!! I encountered something I’ve only every seen in one other piece of media! My current major all consuming obsession is the TBS drama MIU404, and in it there is an ongoing line/joke of one of the main characters saying 「合点承知の助」, which is like a funny kind of older-generation-feeling(?) joke way of saying 了解. It’s like, an affirmation, but sounds like a name, so hence, the funny-not-funny joke
So because of MIU404 I will never be able to forget 合点承知の助… and here it popped up in 映像研!!!

Anyways, I’m going to take a quick break to finish my JP listening for the day, and then come back to reading!

よつばと!Vol. 6 finished at 7:20 pm. Total: 196 pages.

I love this series and am so grateful to have native literature that I can read reasonably fluently even at my very basic skill level.

Thanks so much to @taiyousea for putting together today’s readathon! It is always a qreat way to kick off my summer Japanese study, and to remind myself of how far I’ve come. And thanks to everyone for posting; it’s been fun to read everyone’s progress.

Time to start the readathon! I’ll be going from 2025-06-21T23:45:00Z2025-06-22T23:45:00Z

I just finished dinner and am settled down with a cold beer, ready to start reading. Not sure how much I’ll be able to do tonight - I’m tired after a day of house-hunting in way too hot of temperatures! But I’m hoping this reading will help me relax! My main goals for this time are:

  • Catch up on the just-ended Pokemon Special Vol. 1 BBC bookclub (currently I’m at 63%)
  • Catch up on the CardCaptor Sakura Vol. 4 offshoot bookclub (currently 12% in…and the club is 75% through, I believe)
  • Read chapter 5 in the DC light novel I started in the previous readathon - that’s been going verrry slowly…

After I get through those, I’ll have to see what I’m in the mood for…
