Good morning everybody! Today I found a native Japanese teacher who covers all of the Genki grammar lessons on youtube! She goes over all of the same information which is presented in the textbook, but I think it’s wonderful to watch and have on in the background when I can’t actively study the textbook.
I hope they help! She goes right through all of the grammar points. I think the books are very easy to self study with. I used them in college a decade ago, and I just got the new version this past year. There are cute characters that you get to know as each lesson progresses. Each lesson begins with a short dialogue that uses the grammar points learned in the chapter and some of the new vocabulary. I think it’s extremely relatable and easy to digest, and I personally really like the illustrations, and the way that information is grouped together. There are a lot of tables and charts. I am a very visual learner. If you have any questions about the book or want to see a part of it, let me know
Are there any significant differences beteen the new and old editions? I have free access to the 2002 edition from a library but I’m wondering if the newer one is worth investing in.
So far, I have noticed a few updated/ replaced vocabulary words and they have changed some of the conjugation and footnoted how they used to present it, so that the more colloquial forms are emphasized now. I think overall it’s updated and more current. Additionally, the audio comes with the book now, whereas before you had to buy it separately and it was expensive and there were a ton of CDs. Let me see if I can find some stuff and I’ll post pictures of side by sides if you want.ちょっとまてよ
Alrighty, so upon closer inspection of the first 6 lessons or so, there are a handful of replaced or omitted vocabulary (for example, ビデオ was outdated, so they took that out. Instead of 専門 せんもん for major, it
was replaced with せんこう which my professor had us switch it to back in 2006 anyways.
Additionally, there are better illustrations for the directional words, and some of the vocabulary got reordered, and then the culture notes got updated.
See for yourself
Edit: not sure why the photos aren’t loading, I will work on it
I’m currently working on the first chapter in Genki I so I was quick to check this out. I watched about half the videos for that chapter. The lady goes at what I feel is a slow pace which is great for me because when I read the book I have a tendency to skim in spite of myself and not properly take it in.
These videos are going to be incredibly helpful to me, what a great resource! Thank you so much for sharing it!!!
Thanks so much for posting this! I stopped using the Genki book for a few months to try out the Japanese From Zero series, and the best part of the JFZ series is the connected video lessons that correlate with the book. I recently started Genki again and having accompanying videos will be great!
Thanks so much for sharing ReJi ! I’ve nearly finished Genki volume one but I was planning to review before starting the second volume… These videos will be a perfect sidekick!
