For the kanji 東 I entered “fast”, and it was accepted.
But the correct answer is “east”.

Don’t give them any ideas. 
If I recall 4 letter words do allow one small typo, and it just so happens in this case that the typo matches a different kanji.

It’s true, but if I answer incorrectly, I don’t want my review to be marked as correct. So in this case, I had to exit my reviews, start again, answer incorrectly on purpose, and keep going.
So in this case, I think “fast” should be added to the block list.

Probably also have to exclude ‘east’ from the ‘fast’ kanji then.

To my limited knowledge, kanji often have a lot of peculiar nuances that just can not be described with a word or 2. I gave up on how to explain 流石、先輩・後輩、折角、態とand the words alike, write down their reading for meaning and move on since the English translation is close, but not quite. What I do is remember their meaning, visualize them in my head, and type what ever I can see. And when Wanikani doesn’t like what I typed down for the 5th times, I flip the table and cry.
You could strive for every single word with 100% accuracy, absolute no typo. In that case I recommend the ConfusionGuesser and Wanikani Double-Check for the typos. Just try not to abuse them too much.
Or, embrace the mistakes and move on. As long as you know what the kanji is supposed to means, and how should it be read, you’re golden.

But I didn’t know what the kanji is supposed to mean, that’s my entire point. I had it WRONG, but it was incorrectly counted as RIGHT.
I don’t wanna discuss all the pros and cons. I see multiple posts asking for mods to ban a certain word as a synonym through the block list, and I have made similar suggestions before. I’m not looking to discuss if “fast” should be accepted for a kanji that means “east”.
I’ll let the mods decide whether or not “fast” should be added to the block list.

There is precedent for adding similar words to the block list - “east” and “west”, for example, are similar enough to each other despite being antonyms that the “close enough” detector was accepting both answers, ditto for “north” and “south”, so each was added to the block list of the other.
(Also 早 and 東 are not entirely dissimilar kanji…)

Not only are they close on the keyboard, but they also look very similarily!
In fact, “F” is essentially “E” that has been dropped and broken…
Also, East can be quite Fast:
I got what you feel mate. Indeed it should be blocked (Belthazar and trunklayer got some good points) but on the bright side, now you made this post and have the kanji lingering in your head for a few hours at least, there is a high chance you’ll never forget this kanji again.

Personally for me, if wanikani accepts an answer, I’ll take the W. No need to make it any harder
Even worse, with it not being on the block list, it is actually reinforcing (SRSing into your brain) the wrong meaning. I had a similar case where a wrong answer was accepted, due to it being close enough (which it was and no complaints there, but it should have been on the block list - it is now). I marched that vocab all the way to burned having the wrong meaning. When I used it in conversation, folks wondering what I was trying to say. At that point I finally realized that vocab was something completely different and unrelated. Like if I had somehow in English “learned” that DOG was APPLE and was asking people if I could pet their apple or telling them their apple is cute.
