WonderWitch’s Study Log

I always wish I had more time in the day to study! I did the (current) usual (wanikani, anki, graded readers, listening to the audio of NHK articles) and I also watched 40 minutes of the boy and the heron and started to relearn the difference between the different kind of verbs, plus made new flashcards. I was going to do more later but now is later :joy:

I watched the second third of 君たちはどう生きるか and as of today, I’m past halfway through with level 6’s kanji! Anki is getting more manageable as the days go by - I added too many decks all at once

After I got some recommendations for shows with everyday language, I watched the first episode of “The Boyfriend” with english subs. Tomorrow I want to watch the same episode but with japanese subs. I’m not sure watching with english then japanese is a great study plan, but I like to do it that way. Maybe when I’m more confident with my japanese I’ll take out the english subs altogether.

Did a lot of listening today! Also, one particular deck on anki is getting easier and I have only 11 kanji left for level 6! Tomorrow I plan to continue jpod101 or do some textbook work, ideally both! And continue Boyfriend, I’m enjoying it <3

CW: emotional stuff, but I don’t go into too much detail

After all the usual stuff, plus some textfugu, I finished watching “the boyfriend” for today and I typed up what I said below, which made me think of how it’s so strange how my mind has blocked out so many memories from my 9 month exchange in japan. Because of some trauma and dissociation, I really forgot so so much. Over the last 7 years I’ve been slowly unpacking things as I remembered or processed them, and I knew my decision to start learning japanese again would do that too.

Anyway, I just wanted to say that watching natural conversations in japanese (whether or not you believe reality tv is scripted) was kind of a surreal experience. I’ve only been watching animated films and listening to scripted lessons so far, so watching a live-action show that seems to have real people talking, is a mix of interesting, exciting, sad, fun, puzzling, beautiful and complicated. I guess I’m saying it’s bringing up a lot of feelings and memories for me.

I know too well how easy it could be for me to overdo this learning and cause some pain. I’m doing my best to do it in a healthy way, but my excitement sometimes gets the better of me and learning japanese is all I can think about. I’m cautious to not go too far, but so far it’s been a wonderful and healing experience and I’m excited to continue.

A lot of listening to japanese today! It’s been really useful, even though I’m just watching tv. It’s helped me to “get” what I’ve been learning and it’s really fun which I think is important. I’ve been meaning to do more other study too though, it’s cutting into a bit of that.

I did a little textfugu and I’ve also guru’d 31 out of 37 kanji! Just as I have one more day of vocab left to learn until I have no more lessons! The 15 lessons a day has been so much more achievable and less daunting than the old system of seeing all the lessons available at once.

I think I’ve burnt out in the past because of the overwhelming pile of lessons. This is not my first wanikani account… My first one was from somewhere between 2013-2015. Some things have changed since then, like the introduction of kana only vocab. I am really trying to see this till the end, no matter how long it takes - just as long as I continue.

I finished watching the boyfriend by watching each episode with english subs then with japanese subs  I look forward to the day when my japanese is good enough to watch it all the way through without any english!

I also now have guru’d 33/37 kanji for level 6! I should complete the level in around 2 days! And I’ve completed all my lessons so far, which is awesome.

Tomorrow I’m a bit busy but I’m hoping to use jpod101 since it’s been a bit.

I had a busy day so I didn’t do too much studying other than the usual.

I leveled up!! I’m level 7 now!

I didn’t do much study today and I might not tomorrow. I suddenly became a lot busier  but it’s still great that I did what I did.

Been busier than usual! Been doing as much as I can, which isn’t much at the moment, but some progress is better than none

I didn’t post last night because I fell asleep really early! I guess I’m just that tired, because usually I have trouble sleeping. I’m hoping I have more energy tomorrow to study more, because today I’m busy again.

I was busy all day today and now I’m really tired, so I’m proud of myself for still finding the energy to do today’s challenges

Very happy to say that I actually did a japanesepod101 lesson, which I haven’t done in days! I finished “season 1” of the beginner course, and hadn’t started season 2 yet because for quite a few days now I have been busier than usual and overtired as a result. Also, I knew the speakers were going to be different and I find change hard :joy:

So I’m happy about continuing jpod101! The new speaker is something to get used to, but I’m sure it’ll be fine. It was a 28 minute lesson, so about 3 times as long as older ones

I’m thinking of posting only on eventful/interesting study days, or perhaps once a week. I’ll think about it! I’m scared that will mean more of a possibility that I don’t study

Edit: oops, I posted before I was done!

Forgot to post this last night! For ease I’m going to update all the forums at once which is why I’m still posting this a day late. So see you in a few days or more! Happy halloween!

Okay, I’m back! I did all the listening and reading I talked about below, as well as some more textfugu, anki and wanikani. I haven’t done many wanikani lessons sadly, because for a few days I didn’t sleep until past 6am, missed my meds, plus had some stuff happen, so I did as much as I could, but my brain was just so foggy and I was emotionally drained. It made learning anything new really hard. I think I’ll be able to sleep tonight, hopefully, so I can do some more learning tomorrow. Though maybe not, since I also have been neglecting my art commissions to do japanese learning instead. I really need to finish my current painting, but I’m trying not to stress over it too much.

Finding balance is so hard sometimes! Especially for those on the spectrum. I’ve been obsessed with japanese learning for officially one month now, (which is an awesome milestone!) but I need to do other things as well. I’m finding the 2 month listening and reading challenges are motivating me to do japanese learning everyday, even on days I feel so drained, so it’s good that I’m motivated to at least do a bit regularly. I hope when the challenges are over I continue to learn everyday, but I also think I might need to cut back a bit. I’m a bit stressed about my commissions, honestly

Anyway I am still loving learning japanese, plus I’m so close to one month done for the challenges, which is really cool! I’m really happy with my decision to spread out my forum posts too, it gives more to talk about and reflect on.

In a couple of days I am going to get to level 8! I’m pretty sure I didn’t get up to level 10 on my old account 8 years ago, so I am really excited to reach that goal! I got to think of a way to celebrate, though I might be a bit quick to think about that already :joy:

I did the usual, plus textfugu 5 out of the 6 days! I am getting closer and closer to where I left off on that “online textbook” 10 years ago. I am excited to “complete” (the uncompleted) Textfugu! That would be awesome.

I haven’t done any of the Genki textbook in a looong time, but it’s hard to do all the resources I have all at once. Plus I always try to not break the momentum of using certain resources, since I’m known to abandon something if I get distracted and switch to something else temporarily.

See you next week!

I made it to level 8!!

Also I read all the free level 2 graded readers on the site I was using! Now to find a different source because level 3 probably would be too hard for me. It’ll be exciting to return to the same tadoku site in the future to show that I’ve improved!

Other than the usual, I did textfugu a few times this week and added a lot of my vocab from my notes onto anki, though it’s not up to date yet. I love it when I write down something new I came across, and by the time I go to those notes to load it onto anki, I already learnt it off by heart from a different source :joy:

Like I said below, I haven’t been sleeping great. It kind of wrecks your routine when you can’t sleep till 6am. So that’s my excuse for not doing as much japanese learning haha
