WK trial version defeated 💪

I am done with my first milestone of conquering the first 3 levels and it was quite a breeze. A couple of years ago I bothered with an Heisig Anki deck and after about 100 items I was completely burned out and frustrated. But the structure and the mnemonics on WK in contrast provide a really pleasant learning experience and I wish I knew about WK back then. I am especially surprised, how well everything has stuck so far. Time to get subscribed :grinning:

Congrats on getting through the first three levels! It’s going to get so much more fun (and challenging, but mostly in a good way) from here

Thanks! I assume there is a reason why the first 10 levels are labelled ‘pleasant’ and the next 30 aren’t  I will find out soon I guess.

As you level up if you start to get overwhelmed just know you don’t have to do all the lessons at once. You can just do it in batches of 5 or 10, etc and helping you keep your apprentice items low. If you always do all lessons then you’ll end up getting hundreds of reviews per day so just be mindful of that.

Thanks for that. My current strategy is to do reviews always first. After that my prio is Radicals, then Kanji, and in between, while waiting for new items to get unlocked, I do the vocabularies. I also wait with my next bunch of lessons until I had my first review. It’s working great so far, especially because I can go full throttle atm, but I probably have to tune it down at one point.

Awesome that Wanikani works for you  and even better that you have found the Wanikani community! It’s an amazing resource full of helpful people and an amazing amount of experience sharing, makes the road to learning Japanese so much easier!

Surprisingly, no. None of the items ever really get harder to memorize, it’s just that the size of the pile grows. Eventually you reach a sort of steady state where you burn items about as fast as you do lessons. For me, that was around 2500 total “under review” items.

The only other difference in later stages is the number of similar characters you start to confuse, but even that helps to solidify your understanding (“oh … 人偏 means this and 糸編 means that”).

I bet the community is great. I very much appreciate the responses I got to this rather trivial topic. Today I found the book club which is absolutely amazing, considering most of the headache work is already done.

Congratulations! I wish you good luck on making good progress on your Japanese learning journey!

That‘s very reassuring. Actually I already had some mix-ups, but they happen once and after that things are more clear.

Yes, I am curious how my stack develops over time. So far it doesn‘t seem to be an issue, as long as I clear it daily.

That’s pretty incredible that you only mess things up once then remember! I mess something up once and proceed to forget in a matter of minutes and make the same mistake again

I also just recently completed level 3 and bought a subscription so I am also wondering how the workload will work itself out :grinning:

Congrats on hitting level 4! Don’t you just love those motivating emails WK sends when you level up?

Some are pretty hard to distinguish. Some fun ones you’ll run into if you stick with it:

  • 未 末
  • 鳥 烏

I could NOT see the difference in the latter pair. I ended up having to ask someone and now it’s obvious!

Yes, they are awesome. It‘s kind of like a cinematic after defeating a boss in a video game

I can see that. In these circumstances I usually get suspicious when I learn a new radical/kanji which looks like something I already know. I just had it with canopy and cliff.

鳥 and 烏… There’s this one question Persona 5 that’s referencing this. The Crow is missing the eye or something like that
