Yes! Exactly! The technology makes all aspects of language learning 1000x more accessible.
In high school I was taking art, and to go completely different from my typical style of art I decided to go with ink. Of course, I couldn’t just go pen or anything, no… I had to go ink brush. So, when looking online for inspiration, I decided that I liked Japanese architecture better than Chinese, so based on that (not at all erratic) decision, I decided to look at Japanese-style ink paintings.
This fixation on Japanese culture has continued for a couple of years out of high school, and on a whim this last December I decided to learn Japanese (mostly because I wanted to avoid learning Portuguese) because it was supposedly the hardest language to learn for English Speakers (i.e. I wanted to annoy my dad). It feels pretty natural learning Japanese, so I guess I’ll continue doing this.
I wonder how already knowing a fair bit of Portuguese (since a very young age - my mother is Brazilian) has influenced my learning of Japanese…
It was during Covid lockdowns and i got bored lmao.
I looked at my barely used duolingo app, and I decided “Why not give Japanese a go?” and started learning the kana. I was fully expecting myself to drop it in two weeks, but somehow here I am two years later and at a level where i can understand basic conversations and read manga (I’ve even watched the entire first season of Kimi ni Todoke in japanese with japanese subtitles!)
What I find funny is that I didn’t even start watching anime or reading manga until after i decided to start learning. I started consuming that content since i just figured it would be an easy source of native material. Now I barely have room for all the manga i own lmao
same- i mean- uuhhh yea j-dramas ofc
woah sounds like a really cool experience
My wife is Japanese and my two children are half. We live in Japan.
Learning bc I honestly just think it’s a really cool language. I freak out when I read sentences ngl. Reading novels (fiction or light novels) makes me happy with their sentence flows. Exhaustion from daily obligations kinda get cured.
