Who on earth is SATSUKI?

I guess this mnemonic changed recently?

I have no clue who is this Satsuki for the さつ reading.
We used to see something like “then you sat (さつ) down” for this reading.

She’s a character WaniKani uses for the mnemonic for the さつ reading (with one exception). Looks like you first meet her for 札 in level 3.

If it helps you with visualisation, it’s also the name of the protagonist of My Neighbour Totoro. This girl:

(The elder one, to be precise.)

Fun fact: both girls are named after the fifth month of the year - Satsuki is a ye olde Japanese name for the month, while her sister Mei is the English name “May”.

I really don’t think I met her.

I think they just changed that mnemonic.

Please, someone, don’t let me look like the crazy one
Can anyone else remember the time where さつ was for “sat”?

Even though Satsuki indeed looks like a dope mnemonic

I agree with you, I can’t remember ever coming across Satsuki in mnemonics :exploding_head:

But I’ll personally think of Satsuki Kiryuin :slightly_smiling_face:

服を着た豚ども!!!

Apparently they updated this on December 12th: Thursday December 12 2024 Content Updates

I wish that instead of updating their mnemonics, they added a second tab and let us choose mnemonic that fits us best. Set the new one as default if you believe it’s better… but keep the previous one. Then again it’s just a wish and we all know it’s not happening.

Tsurukame in iOS lets you add notes quite easily.

This tripped me up too. I forgot the reading mnemonic for 札. I went back to check it only to find some girl named Satsuki. I thought I was losing it. I never remembered meeting a Satsuki.

I’m still trying to remember what the mnemonic was before Satsuki showed up. :upside_down_face:

It was something like “you give the umbrella to the tree and then you sat” or something like that.

Ahh, came back to me now. Thanks. :slightly_smiling_face:

I can kind of see why they changed it. “sat” probably isn’t a good mnemonic for “satsu” because “sat” is already used in 里 for “sato”. Maybe that’s why I had an issue with that mnemonic in the first place.

Ah, alrighty then. I didn’t think I’d come across that mnemonic before either, but it’s been a while since I did any reviews, so I wasn’t sure.

Actually I was pleased when they changed this because “sats down” is lame and not nearly as memorable as Satsuki. It really pays to glance through the updates and check for changes like this - I thought I was losing it when they changed 北 to “hoe cookies” from some kind of “hawk” or something. After that I check regularly.

Satsuki is Jourum’s younger sister.

I’m pretty sick of getting gaslit by the SRS myself, and I hate having to watch the forums for advance notice of all the stupid changes they make under the guise of “content updates.” These aren’t improvements. “Satsuki” isn’t any less dumb than sitting or any more related to bookshelves. Remaining “Jourm” to “Joe” when there was already Jo was asinine. Making me re-memorize content is not helpful. Just stop.

Simple things are constantly broken, the website is worse than it was years ago when I made the mistake of buying a lifetime subscription, and there’s no need for it. Just stop. I would pay a monthly subscription to STOP getting new “content.” I would pay a second lifetime subscription to re-buy the old content I bought with my first lifetime subscription. Just stop.
