Thing is I did 15 lessons of Minna no Nihongo during my holidays, then joined a course directly in the second year of teaching, so I lacked the first year vocabulary.
I’m planning to study alone now, because my class has still not finished Minna no Nihongo vol1. In a year we only did from lesson 15 to lesson 21.
It’s slow, isn’t it?

It is slow, yes. At the language school I take classes they go at a similar pace. The group I started in 2 years ago at chapter 3, are now at chapter 22, I think. Luckily the school has classes at different levels, and I was able to slide up to the highest class (second intermediate book, chapter 17). It sounds like some of students in that class took 6 years to get there (others joined from university or self study).
Edit: I have also noticed that some classes move faster as whole, though. Teachers tend to spend more time on concepts that are hard to grasp for some, and that can quickly feel like it is holding you back if you’re faster.
