When did the "spikes" radical get tall?

In my review pile today, I encountered a radical I didn’t remember learning. However, upon failing to identify it, I learned that it’s “spikes”, but the central spikes are far taller than I’ve seen them before:

Am I miss-remembering how I was taught this kanji? Because I remember it short, like in “業”. Is it possible it’s… gotten taller? I feel like I’m having a Berenstein Bears/Mandela effect moment.

I had a similiar experience when they just had changed it I also thought I was suffering from Mandela but it was changed =)

Wow, thanks for confirming that! I’m laughing that we both called out the “mandela effect”.

Seriously thought my memory was failing when I saw it listed as a radical for 並.

I literally Googled it and found this post. Thought I was tripping out :joy:

I love WaniKani and everything with it, but this tripped me! I hate radicals! I always get rid of them first, like ALL OF THEM, at every level - just to get them out of the way.:face_vomiting:

I mean we’re trying to burn them and if they would change radicals like this, it’s like stealing our time and chance of burning them :smiling_face_with_tear:

I get where you’re coming from, but in this instance it’s less “they shouldn’t have changed it” and more “they shouldn’t have drawn it so weird in the first place”. It gets a lot more use when you draw it normally rather than squish it up.

Also, you’re trying to learn things, not burn things. Don’t let the gamification distract you from your actual goal of learning Japanese.
