What textbook should I use?

Hello I want to start learning a language and I’ve seen allot of people use Genki and or Quartet or switching from one to another. Which one should I use? Or should I use both at the same time?

Genki I and II are great beginner books. Quartet I and II are intermediate books, to be used after Genki. You can’t go wrong with Genki I!

I like Japanese From Zero.

I was happy with Genki I and II.
They are quite expensive though. You could just learn from Tokini Andy (YouTube grammar course which covers Genki chapter by chapter).

Quartet books are intermediate Japanese, no? I considered getting those, but I think I can learn from immersion and looking things up on the go instead.

I also recommend to start with Genki I (and WaniKani). You have to buy the book itself, but there are quite a few additional free materials to optimize the whole process for self-learners (e.g. sethclydesdale.github.io).

If Genki isn’t right for you, then Minna no Nihongo (ISBN: 978-4883196036) should be comparable.

Omg thank you so much!!

I went through the Minna no Nihongo series,
I think either is good, they teach the same grammar points just in slightly different orders.
Using both at the same time would be unnecessary, just choose the one you like and stick to it.

Also, big props to Japanese From Zero! George Trombley is hilarious,
If you have time to watch some youtube videos, he is the man.

I (personally) don’t use a textbook for now. Imabi is my best friend <3
