What should I use as a secondary learning tool along with Wani Kani? Please explain in extremely simple words
also please give your personal opinions as well because I have no clue whatsoever about this stuff (as of now at least)
also ( ]”[ ) is the crocodile on the Wani Kani logo

For grammar you can use Bunpro as that is the best (atleast for me) for grammar as it has the same SRS system as wanikani and you can even link your wanikani progress through api (you can find api in the dropdown durtle pfp on your dashboard) .
For recall i use kaniwani , you can sync your wanikani progress here and recive reviews and lesson based on what you learned on wanikani .
For listening you can do either passive immersion (listening while doing chores or walking etc.) or active immersion (focusing on listening and trying to catch grammar points like の,は,が) , you can listen to beginner podcasts available for free on youtube by Nihongo con teppie or Shun podcast (both speak slowly and you’ll understand some words and grammar ) .
For reading , it boils down to what you enjoy as in my case i read manga ( you can search crystal hunters or S level graded readers ) for enjoyment and Bunpro reading passages to build up ‘stamina’ .
And if you want to practice speaking japanese with someone who is also learning grammar then here is a thread , you can talk to them…..
These are the tip of the iceberg compared to the whole of available japanese resources available on internet (some free , some paid) and there are many ways you can do the Grammar , listening , reading , recall so search the threads in the wanikani and bunpro community for resources . You can also ask the community memebers as most are very friendly to beginners like us which i think is the most amazing thing about this community so if you have some doubt then ask here .![]()
Good luck
in your japanese learing journey
.
Thank you very much, I’ll do my best ![]()
I would say start with Japanese from Zero textbook with the free youtube videos for Grammar. If you feel like it is not too slow, continue with these books and videos. If, however, it feels too slow, you can move on to Genki 1 and look for the free grammar videos on Youtube.
For reading, I would suggest starting with Satori Reader as you can link WaniKani kanji that you already know.
For listening, I will suggest starting with Nihongo con Teppei for beginners on youtube.
And lastly, for vocabulary, use anki and download a deck with the first 5k words or use ToriSRS which is very similar to WaniKani and will allow you to either study words in a JLPT order or in order of frequency.
Good luck.
Thank you very much, I will use these
Though I’m not a fan of anki decks. But anyway thank you very much (why aren’t there 2 solutions? Its so annoying tbh)
One other option that’s worked for me at least is MaruMori, which has grammar plus more vocab than WK, plus reading tiles as well as you work through the adventure path. Mostly because I just didn’t click with Bunpro, but I really like the way MM does the grammar and the reading sections are nice, plus I like having much more vocab - though they don’t have nearly as many mnemonics and I hate their kanji ones so I pull those from here.
My assumption is that you already know hiragana and katakana. I would recommend learning grammar via BunPro AND watching comprehensible input videos at https://cijapanese.com/
You can start with their free videos at the absolute beginner level so that you get used to hearing the words you’re learning in WK and BP and then some. I actually wish I had found them sooner in my learning journey so that my listening skills would at least have been at the same level as my kanji and grammar. In my case, I was doing WK for a year before I found BP. I’ve stepped on the brakes for kanji to get my grammar up to speed. I’ve done that for a bit more than a year and am disappointed with my listening skills and kind of burned out a bit on the grammar lessons so putting the brakes on grammar and just watching CIJ videos right now.
