I’m certain with some practice you would do a lot better than you think, especially after a couple of weeks.
i wish i could move i would have been n1 within 2 years
there is no wish - only do
Consider the anime series “Cardcaptor Sakura”.
Looking at the kanji in the subtitle files and the level you learn them in WaniKani, you get a chart like this:
By the time you complete WaniKani level 30, you’re recognize 65% of the unique kanji used in the series.
But some kanji are used repeatedly, and some are used very few times. Counting the total kanji usage, level 30 gets you to 85% recognition.
The last 30 levels get you almost another 35% unique kanji and 15% total kanji recognition.
Here’s the chart for the original Sailormoon anime, which has similar results:
This time, level 30 gets you barely more than 55% of unique kanji, but still almost 85% of total kanji usage.
It’s more than twice as many episodes long as Cardcaptor Sakura, so there’s more room for unique kanji usage.
And the encyclopedia entries from the Pokemon video game series:
uni dude i probs go just to get better
you convinced me dude
one thing to maybe also mention drives me a little nuts
while I might recognize a kanji at level 30 or even 40,
the vocab sometimes was like ok don’t quite know what this means
sometimes you can figure it out sometimes you can’t
I’m level 52 now (via kitsun thank goodness) and I’m still learning new kanji that finding useful.
The more kanji you know the more words you can either guess their meaning or lookup w/o radical searches.
is the vocab important?
i dont actually use wanikani at all but yeah. the more kanji you know, the more you can start to sort of intuit what words (well, readings at least, if not also via sound) mean just by the characters + the contextual situation
it doesn’t always work tho
this is equivalent to asking is the alphabet important
give that some thought
i mean in wainkani
This is this thread but you only have to try. (And I think OP is still around somewhere.)
to the pits!!!
it’s all important except for 河豚
seriously it’s all important and what you use will depend on your life experience and goals.
Same here, there are some kanji I leaned elsewhere before Wanikani and now I’m realising how useful those kanji are. Like 寂しい (lonely) for example, this is a word that you see often but it’s kanji is level 56 on WK for some reason. Or 駄目 (だめ, not good) and 無駄 (muda) where you learn 駄 at level 50
i meant if i lived in japan
you are allowed to speak japanese outside of japan !!!
you can also practice, skype, zoom, etc!!
my Japanese is at n5 so i am not good at oput
Vocab are very important. In a way, Kanji, both readings and meanings, can be know by inference after knowing enough vocabularies; and then in turn, guessing and learning new vocabularies faster. (That is, if you pay attention to details. Maybe also read or write.)
At very least, learning radicals and quizzing on a lone Kanji force giving attention to details.
the sooner you start the sooner you’ll be able to “output”
try italki (there are other services as well - this is the one i use)
you can find an instructor to work one on one with that fits your level.
it takes a while to get over that fear of speaking but it’s WORTH IT!
for me i use the vocab as a way to know the diffrent reading
