I think everyone should start learning grammar as soon as possible. No need to wait until level 10. ![]()
The whole “we made two audio files but then the system points to only one because they coincidentally had the same name” or something thing seems to have happened once or twice. That seems like a more plausible explanation to me than the native speakers who recorded files just not knowing how to pronounce them or something.
Cool
do you think my textbook is a good place to get started at this point, or is there another “in addition to” or best first place to start for grammar?
genki is fine even at wk level 1. you’re good to go, no need to wait.
This site hasn’t made me any better at Tekken. ![]()
It also wouldn’t be unheard of for natives to make mistakes. I’d saying getting the pitch accent right 99.5% of the time is pretty good. ![]()
Well, I mean, if “they’re not always right” really means “if you match them perfectly you’ll basically be at native level pitch accent for individual words” then I’m not too concerned about it. It sounded like it was spottier than that.
It hasn’t taught me how to become the goodest boy.

Yeah, I didn’t mean to overstate the situation. I’ve probably noticed like a dozen pitch accent errors out of the several thousand vocab words I’ve encountered on WaniKani.
Yeah, I can relate to this. I’m currently level 10 here and I’m almost finished with Japanese From Zero book 2, and I started BunPro over a month ago.
The only thing one should learn right away when starting Japanese is Hiragana and Katakana, but more importantly Higarana. If you do it right, you should be able to learn it in a week or two and the learning process from there on gets much easier.
YOU ARE A LIFESAVER I’ve been looking for something like this since I stopped taking actual classes (college I go to only teaches 2 years of Japanese) so I can brush up and keep myself from forgetting everything ![]()
Though I can’t afford it right now, since I’m paying for other things like wanikani, which should I focus on? I know that learning grammar you have to at least know how to read but do you have to be extremely proficient?
It’s really up to you what you want to focus on. Bunpro is pretty cheap though. If I remember correctly it’s 30 for an entire year ![]()
Personally I put more focus on Wanikani.
There’s a pretty long trial for Bunpro so you can always try it out and decide what you want to focus on ^^
I don’t think you need to be extremely good with grammar to be able to read. I’ve finished N5 and N4 grammar (And I’m currently working on N3) and I think it’s enough to read ^^
Perfect!!! $30 is pretty cheap :o I’ll have to pick up the free trial and see what its like thank you!
Imabi is a great source for grammar and it’s free. Topics are separated by levels.
I’ll have to check that one out too!
I wouldn’t really say that sounds like 1 to me, but I’ll ask my girlfriend what she thinks in the morning.
I was searching when I may eventually see 蝋燭 (ろうそく)within WK but it’s not listed. Candles are a fairly everyday item too. Perhaps キャンドル is more common but I’ve come across ろうそくin the readings a couple of times. Not complaining, just evidence to build your vocab outside the WK sphere. Also noticed that basic medical terms or anatomy are not in the directory either (among others). I know WK users still build out their Anki decks for this reason. Was there ever discussion for users to be able to add content within WK?
Awesome, thank you! I just added the deck. I’ve been wanting to try out Kitsun.io a bit more but haven’t gotten to it yet.
