I am having to restrain myself so hard from setting goals, it’s my favorite thing. But I came so far last year with my only goal being: try to listen to something every day, and that being my only goal was so stress free it was remarkable.

So my goal: try to listen to something every day.

I’m so excited to see how far I can get this year! I’m so excited looking back and seeing how far I got last year!

Good luck to us all in 2025!!!

1)Do better on the JLPT N2 or barely pass
2)Get to level 52 on wanikani
3)Finish reading Harry Potter and the chamber of secrets
4)Get a tutor
5) stop doomscrolling in English

Reasonable stuff I think

Unattainable goals
-finish wanikani

  • Pass the N2 with a high score
    -be fluent
    -listen to only japanese content
    -finish multiple books

My goal for this year is simple: 300 hours of reading :books:

Ideally, I’d like to average to one hour per day, but I don’t want to put too much pressure on myself.

As for me, I’d love to:

  • Get to Wanikani lvl 30
  • Read a novel (at least start it)
  • Reach N3
  1. For the Wanikani goal, I will be creating a habit of doing 30 mins-1 hour of wk every day. It was going really well last year, until I had some personal problems and other priorities.
  2. Soon after I started learning Japanese, I bought “your name” fully in Japanese. I don’t really have the level to read it. But I aspire to be able to read it this year. I plan on focusing the first trimester on wanikani and grammar, and then study all the vocab of the chapter before reading it, and researching unknown grammar patterns on the go. Not knowing the grammar is much less dramatic for me than not knowing the vocab. Probably I’ll be trying to read some book/manga/something at my current level to practice first.
  3. I will be getting a tutor, and I will be trying to finish the Tobira books I bought. The problem is that opening a textbook is hard for me. So I will have to work on that habit and understand why is it mentally taxing to work with a workbook.

It don’t really want to focus on the results, instead I will be trying to incorporate the right habits. But knowing in which direction I should be moving is helpful. So if I don’t get to reach these goals by the end of the year, it’s fine either way. The important part is to advance :orange_heart:

I want to finish Japanese from Zero as well. I’m a good way through the videos for Level 1, but I want to go back through book1 for extra practice. Then I want to pass at least one RocketLanguage.com Benchmark test, preferably two.

  • Keep doing Wanikani reviews every day and try my best to keep up with new lessons - this should lead me to level 37 or so by the end of 2025
  • Incorporate Bunpro into my Japanese learning process
  • Pass JLPT N4 mock and actual exam if possible
  • Read at least one article from NHK Easy everyday
  • Finish at least one ABBC reading
  • Come up with more ideas to use Japanese in my life (start watching anime/drama with Japanese subtitles? listening to podcasts? still need to figure out what will work with me)

Wanikani has been fundamental in getting me back into Japanese learning again, and I’m finding the SRS methodology very efficient so far. I’m really looking forward to 2025!

I want to stop grinding so I can start shining :sparkles:
In saner terms: I want to reach a point where I can enjoy simple content with fun instead of just grinding. I managed to read a few chapters of よつばと! with Mokuro but it took some effort, my grammar skills sucked. I think I have vocabmaxxed enough that I will benefit from grammar and reading as much as possible, so I will be using Bunpro too now. I think if I keep up the pace I have had in the last months it is very doable. If I had to make a concrete goal: WK level 35

I have some goals too.

  1. Reach the level 60 on wani kani and write a celebration post all in english (not my native language)
  2. Go through all genki 2 and start quartet books.
  3. Play a game completely in japanese.

I think the last one will be the harder.

Goals for 2025 :rocket:

Reading

In 2024 (for 11 months), I’ve read 30 novels and almost 11k novel pages. I was thinking about maybe shooting for 50 novels in 2025. I honestly don’t think it’s realistic because of the time required, though. At the same time, for some reason I have more time to read now that I’m in full-time job compared to when I was a student until June / graduation. Major change in my life. So it would be a nice number if I could manage it. Also crazy to think about how during the past 5 years (since 2020) until now I’ve completed 100 novels (finished the most recent one today!). So 50 in one year?! :eyes: It’s okay to be ambitious, but I feel like I’m reaching for the stars here. I think going for 30 books like in 2024 is more realistic.

Read 50 novels :books:
Read 15k novel pages :bookmark:

Listening

Watch at least 5 anime without subs.

アオのハコ (ep 9 - )

Lower than 2024, I don’t want anime to be the focus of the year. Would be fun to track how many hours of live streams I’ve watched during a year. I watch a lot of Kuzuha and Kanae. A lot of clips and edited videos have subs (either jp/en), so just lives.

Track hours of live streaming (50+ hours?)

Vocab

Currently at 16k.

Reach 25 000 known words on jpdb
→ April 1st:
→ July 1st:
→ Oct 1st:

Grammar

I’m not doing any active grammar study anymore. So mostly for tracking purposes.

Beginner here; currently on Level 3 of WK. My main focus is reading, although I want to go to Japan in 2026 so some speaking and listening ability would be nice. For this year, I want to prioritize consistency: at least 10 minutes of Japanese every day. My goals are:

  • Reach level 20 of WK
  • Read 3 volumes of a super easy manga
  • Play one Pokemon game on Switch in Japanese
  • Find one online resource and stick with it. Currently playing around with NativShark, Maru Mori, and Renshuu. I should probably focus on one to avoid staying in beginner stage.
  • Finish Genki I by end of June 2025 and Genki II by end of 2025 and the YouTube series for them.

I think all of these are reasonable; I could probably increase a few but I would rather exceed them than not meet them.

Hello Everyone!
I’m a serial scroller but this is my first post. I joined up on WaniKani a few years ago, made it to level 5, then got overwhelmed with life (work, wedding, travel, having a kid, baby brain) and am now back to hit my goals of learning Japanese. I’ve been using my Hobonichi to track my progress and I’ve found it super relaxing and helpful.

I started wanting to learn Japanese after I visited Japan back in 2016 for my job as a Flight Attendant. With my job, if I speak another language not only do I get paid a extra $2.15 a hour, but I also go to that country more often and, in the case of Japan, actually have to work less days. Because I live in Virginia, and the trip to Japan is so long, that I would only have to work 9 days a month to get paid my full month. (meanwhile a Spanish speaker doing Mexico or Spain has to actually work more hours than a non speaker because they are so close to VA geographically to get the same number of hours).

My Primary Goal:
I want to increase my study time in the language to be at least two hours a day. My final goal is to achieve full fluency (speaking, listening, writing). I estimate this to be about 3,500 study hours + immersion time based on my readings.

My Action Plan:

*Set time goals (minimum) of 2 hours a day (stretch goal of 3).
*Set content goals : Do all WaniKani, KaniWani and Anki Reviews daily (this takes 1-2 hours). Story Learning and other Immersion goals 1-2 hours.
*Take the JLPT 1 in two years. I don’t need this for my job but it would make me happy to achieve (I need to read at that level anyway) and would be good to have if I got furloughed again (like during COVID) to find translation work.
*Take my language qualification in 3 years at my job which requires a phone interview with a Native Speaker.

Obstacles

  • Tired - so just start and do what I can get done
  • Lack of focus/concentration - use the pomodoro timer or get up and walk around to get rid of fidgets
  • Lack of time - Do app reviews on toilet or any spare min I have in between. Immersion can be over the speakers with podcasts while doing dishes or laundry. Make the most use of baby naps.

Why Am I doing This?
I want to prove to myself that I can do and achieve this. That I’m capable of going the distance. To enjoy myself more when I go to Japan and spend more time at home with my family. By doing this I can earn more money, have better security for work as I upskill, and take care of my family. To eat good food in Japan

I tried keeping digital journals on GoodNotes and I use Toggle as a timer but having it in front of me and writing it down really helps feel accomplished!

I have just started learning Japanese a couple days ago since I need language credits for College. I have always been interested in Japan and the language and I am hoping someday to visit Japan. My goals for Japanese in 2025 is too finish Genki 1 and 2 as well as get to level 30 on WaniKani. I also want to restart my favorite video games (LOZ Breath of the Wild and Tears of The Kingdom) in their original language, Japanese. Even if I don’t understand it, I’ve completed the game MANY times in English, so it will be good exposure with already knowing what to do. Also, I want to start reading Manga but I don’t have any idea where to start… any suggestions?

How do you have that JLPT grammar progress? Just curious if I can use it, an outward indicator of my progress would be nice.

I think that I might try it. Mostly because I have stickers and I really want to use them to decorate😅
