I’m pretty excited for it and hoping it means I won’t have to rely on dashboard scripts as much. Widgets sound nice and customizable
Im using Smouldering Durtles so I don’t mind how the original UI will look like- however I hope the app will still work since it’s just accessing API endpoints and not manipulating the UI in any way. Can anyone confirm that this was successfully tested or can be ruled out as potential issue due to its reliance on a stable API version?
Can’t give an opinion on something i haven’t seen. So yay new dashboard!
Knowing that the Dashboard is getting a face lift let’s me know that they’re still making WaniKani a priority and not letting it fall to crabigators. That’s a relief. But changes, for me personally I’m of the mindset “if it isn’t broke, don’t “fix” it” lol Especially being so used to the current dashboard. I’m thinking “ahhh, I hope it doesn’t get all confusing and convoluted” lol But I overall trust the WaniKani team to take the upgrade into a good, comfortable direction. I also hope that it won’t really break the third party apps I and others use. It would be EXCELLENT if they came back out with an official WaniKani app. I enjoy WaniKani on the go.
Anywho, thanks for all that you have, currently are, and will do for WaniKani and the community
Can’t really say until I see it in action. That said, and not to be a broken record, I’d rather have review summaries back, haha.
Who knows! Maybe that will be a widget!
(probably not)
After seeing the spoilers I want it NOW. Gimme. Give plz. Give Give give.
Last big update messed up my progress for two whole years, so I’m not very optimistic. Especially because I heavily rely on dashboard userscripts during my ADHD motivation struggles
UPD: As soon as I complained here, things already started to break down lol. My lessons stopped loading
I think it looks nice, it’s cool that there’s more customization and tailoring to specific user wants/needs, hard to argue with it being more feature-rich, and I think it’s a good sign that WK is still being thoughtfully examined and worked on (beyond the sparce content additions and revisions)
That being said, I think of all the potential criticism I could materialize for WaniKani- the current Dashboard is probably not something I’d really point to. Not to say there’s no room for improvement, but none of it is really pressing enough to make me “excited”. Kind of just neutrally hoping it doesn’t interfere with muscle memory more than anything
I’d like a widget that drops a sample of the day’s popular forum topics on the dashboard.
I feel like forum traffic fell off a cliff when they removed that feature in the original dashboard in favor of a box that just generically says, “Visit the forums!”
I just hope it doesn’t mess up Tsurukame on iOS. I’m in the home stretch at level 50 and don’t want to change my day to day with WaniKani too much at this point.
Very much this.
And also this.
I’m glad WK isn’t dead (given the pace of the competition it has seemed a little like it might be on its way out) so that’s a win! But this isn’t what I would prioritise. Oh well! Appreciate I am not necessarily representative of most users, so as long as it doesn’t break Tsurukame I won’t complain.
Unlikely. They mentioned changes to the pages, but not changes to the API. And while breaking changes to the DOM that scripts rely upon has always been something script authors have to be prepared for, breaking changes to the API are not expected to happen.
Looking forward to seeing what widgets are in there. Great that things are being developed. Thanks.
Looks good. I don’t use any scripts so I’m just expecting an improvement.
The pictures looked good and I think it’s necessary for WK to make a better non-script/non-addon experience for those users. I won’t be using it much, as I’ve moved to Tsurukama and Smouldering Durtles, but my original intention when I joined was to not use addons. It also lets users know that the product is still being worked on, beyond just content changes.
Making stuff more customizable is never really a bad thing, however I do hope they roll out this update by having the current UI (which I don’t think anyone had a problem with, I’ve never seen it mentioned or complained about on here) preserved as it is. If someone logs in and sees an entirely different UI from the jump then I can imagine that being frustrating, having to go a fiddle around with settings to revert it back to the way you remember will just be a chore.
I remember when the review summary got removed and the backlash on that was pretty severe so I appreciate the heads-up this time around. It felt like a feature was removed in pursuit of the intangible “progress“ that was being made in the background, which there was, but for the end user it felt pretty bad, it was like 1 step forward 2 steps backward in terms of the overall experience. Because of that, I’ll be taking a screenshot of my current dashboard so that I can try to recreate it exactly with the widgets if possible.
Also shout out to all the incredible work that the user-script writers have done. I’m sure if people aren’t happy with the changes then some talented community members will fix it.
Not my script but the review summary script is great:

Just getting caught up with the annoucements, is the preview no longer available? All my attempts to login at the given url fail.
I’m excited for it, like getting a new toy for free as a lifetime member. Probably won’t do much to quicken my pace but it’ll be fun to play with widgets. Kind of a bummer that I just recently figured out how to install scripts and they’re all going to break or become obsolete next week.
I am really excited for the Heat Map!
Im excited, I was just talking with people in Bunpro forums about how Wanikani was dying and while useful in its own right as a trendsetter, it had been left for dead. And with many other SRS programs popping up trying to do what Wanikani does with more resources and features its nice to see a major update. As explained in the post, he said this update was needed for many more other important updates. And sometimes a UI change is needed to better implement other ideas for the overall user exprerience. And it sounds like they are adding the option for modders to make their own mods for the widgets so its not like they are getting thrown out.
I think a lot of people(long time users) will be annoyed but honestly if its the routine theyll continue and maybe struggle for a few days getting readjusted but then continune as normal as they set everything up as they like.
