I am caught up! Those of you who read 水車館の殺人事件 with the MBC on Natively might be feeling a sense of deja vu with me
It looks like that came out 4 years before this book, but I suspect no reference is meant. Just a very similar manner of death. I like 火村’s “maybe” about it being Makabe’s corpse - is this all a set up by Makabe to seem like two real locked room mysteries?! But uh…presumably those are fresh bodies so I’m a bit concerned if so!
Looking forward to next week, things are heating up

My assumption right now is that Makabe committed suicide (or faked his death) because he’s moving on from writing to performance art.
I’m usually not a fan of stories that try to be too meta, but I’ve been enjoying this book so far.

mfw i’m proud of myself for finishing this week’s reading in a reasonable timeframe and then notice it’s two chapters this week

Alright I’m back. I wonder what the point of the pranks was. Presumably they were done by the murderer… The best guess I had was that it was Ishimachi so that he could have ‘proof’ he didn’t leave his room at night but that doesn’t seem to have panned out. The old guy presumably has some connection to the fire from the prologue, but I hope it wasn’t just Makabe b/c suicide would be pretty lame and trivialize the basement locked room.
