I finished it! It was fun

Summary

Now we know better what Luis think of Monica. I don’t like いじわる pay, but at least he truly respects her and places above himself.

And it is clear that Felix doesn’t know yet who Monica is. But the way he thinks about her, I suspect that there will be romance in the future books.

The end

This was a much more satisfying ending than the last regular chapter and first epilogue.
It was fun seeing Louis’s and Felix’s views about each other and their respective political camps. Shed a bit more light upon the political situation in the country as well. And we finally got an explanation why Monica was left at the school, even though it looked like her guarding job was over. It was actually an open-ended surveillance job all along.

That actually didn’t feel entirely clear to me. But after reading the way he thinks about the Silent Witch, I’m now no longer completely sure he isn’t the prologue from the first chapter, either.

This was fun a fun read, all in all, and I’ll probably pick up volume 2 at some point. Thanks for organizing, @Redglare.

Thoughts

So I found the last line of the chapter intriguing… until I started writing this comment. I thought レディ・エヴァレット was a different first name, like Felix had been brainwashed into thinking the Silent Witch had a name other than Monica or something. Would make for some good theorizing. But turns out it’s just “lady”? That’s a lot less fun.

I recommend reading “Secrets of the Silent Witch” for a deeper understanding.

Are we really getting an answer to this?!

…I guess something slipped through the book edits, huh?

edit: See replies.

Hum. “I want her to get more confidence because seeing someone who is so much better at magic than me deprecate herself so much frankly hurts me.” is at least a much better reason than “I enjoy her suffering”

Hum hum. And if that’s the case, it would make sense to give that order to someone who is not part of the second prince’s faction.

Are we solving all mysteries in this chapter that came after the epilogue?

Wow. “Like something repulsive/disgusting is squirming under the surface of that smiling face” is probably the most graphic and most damning description we ever got of Felix.

I guess despite what we learnt previously the fact that he enjoys the struggles he inflicts on Monica doesn’t change. He calls it “bullying the strong”, but it just feels vindictive.

Also he absolutely deserves Rin.

I wonder how much you can choose who becomes your (?) spirit, or if it’s more of a “you get what you get” thing. ウィルディアヌ seems perfectly suited for a prince, making me think that that is probably no coincidence. Nero is a good match for Monica, although he sometimes feels a bit more pushy than Monica would probably like if she could’ve chosen. Rin seems far more cheeky than I’d expect of someone Louis has chosen himself.

Not catching that guy would’ve made it much worse over time for the academy though? Or I guess maybe Crockford would’ve liked to catch him himself without making it public.

Ooooooh. I wonder if he destroyed the thing himself on purpose?!

We’re really solving all the mysteries in this “after the epilogue” chapter.

So… I guess there is actually something to hide, then. Nice.

It’s him! It’s him after all! He’s the blue-eyed guy in the prologue who was fascinated by Monica’s magic!!

Yessssssss!

It’s fun that he’s independently fascinated by her twice, even if (or especially because?) both feelings differ by a lot

?!??!?!??!?

I guess that is his one redeeming quality.

Agreed. The epilogue didn’t even provoke any live-tweeting reactions from me. It wasn’t bad, but this was definitely more interesting.

Did it? I don’t remember any new information we got apart from “the king probably wants to watch the second prince”.

Am I misunderstanding that second sentence? Because I think he absolutely, 100%, without a doubt is that guy from the prologue. And for that reason alone I think that he doesn’t know yet who Monica is; he clearly isn’t directing that fanboyish zeal towards the Monica that he knows.

Let me know if there’s anything fun I missed in the character portraits. I gave the first four a very cursory read, and decided that it’s probably not worth the effort to read them without added furigana and Yomichan lookups. (And then I threw the afterword into ChatGPT because I’m definitely not sifting through that to find out whether it contains anything interesting.)

Thanks for suggesting this book and organizing the book club, @Redglare. I enjoyed the book a lot and I’ll definitely read volume 2 at some point… though probably once it’s easier for me to read L30 books. I only struggled through this because it was fun to read, but it was still a struggle!

And thanks to everyone participating in the threads! A fun book is only half of what makes a book club great

I left my thoughts of the book as a review over on Natively. Overall I thought it was quite fun, with a few wrinkles of various sizes. Especially less bullying would’ve been nice. And more Isabelle, of course. And… I was hoping that only the first book would be academy-based, but alas.

Also… I finished my first L30! And my first IBC!

I guess I was a bit tired. I misread the end of the first sentence and thought it was basically repeating the whole “Monica cast a high-powered special effects spell without chanting” twice in different words.

Oh, definitely!

My thoughts about the book -

Another rambling theory....with some evidence to support it

What if this isn’t the real Felix we are seeing? What if Felix is “Felix”?

Originally, the task assigned to Louis by the King was to protect the 2nd prince because he was in danger. But the unusual twist was that the King specifically told Louis he was not allowed to let the prince know he was being protected. What reason could the king have? Was it because the King suspected something about the Second prince? Was it because the King didn’t want word to get back to Duke Crockford (the Second Prince’s supporter with major influence on Selendia Academy)?

What if the danger to Felix is ongoing and in fact already underway? If the “Felix” that we see interacting with the student council, Monica etc, is not actually Felix, then it would make sense. And the danger to the second prince has already occurred because the real prince is somewhere else (imprisoned?) and the one who looks like Felix is actually someone else: A magician who used magic to transform themselves into the likeness of Felix. Felix”, not Felix.

  2. Companion Spirits: If spirits only attach to advanced magicians like one of the Seven Sages, it would explain why “Felix” has Wirdian the White Lizard. It would explain why Cyril & Thornley, who are lower-ranked magicians, don’t have companion spirits. And it would explain why “Felix” is always calm and seems distant and hiding things. Because he’s not the real Felix! And the fake “Felix” knows Monica is a Seven Sages and is toying with her – even going so far as to braid her hair, etc. Very sinister twist to the hair styling scene! And maybe “Felix” sneaks out at night to go somewhere because he’s actually visiting the real Felix, who he has imprisoned somewhere else??

  3. The Chess Piece scene: I recall an earlier scene where “Felix” is in his dorm room playing with a chess piece when he is talking to his companion spirit Wirdian, about Monica and why he wanted her on the student council and kept close by. It’s like he has some plans for her? Also, the night Cyril had his magic power poisoning episode in the forest, both Monica’s group and Felix (with Wirdian) set off in the direction of the forest around the same time. Monica’s time spent with Cyril seemed to take a while. While I was reading this encounter, I was half-expecting Felix to come out of the shadows and reveal himself to the reader and/or to Monica’s group. But instead Nero, encounters Felix right next to the dorm, (pretending to be?) fixing the plank covering the gap in the dorm fence. When Nero introduces himself as Dustin Gunter and carries on about being a traveler who happened upon Cyril, it felt like “Felix” was just playing along and knew exactly who Nero was. Nero got away too easily, it seemed.

  4. The blue sapphire brooch gift: Louis made the brooch. The brooch had a GPS-like tracker, in that the ruby brooch Louis kept would always know where the sapphire Brooch was located (i think that’s what was written). The King gave the brooch to his son as a present. “Felix” knew that’s what it was (although no one would suspect this knowledge because Felix was known as a 素人 at magic) and ordered Wirdian to crush it.

Now Felix wasn’t protected by the brooch and Louis also couldn’t see where Felix was. The broken brooch is what led Louis to ask Monica to go under cover at Selendia Academy. From “Felix’s” perspective, it seemed from the start, he knew what the brooch was and knew it could track him (whether he knew it was his father the King or Louis that was tracking him is unclear…). “Felix” might not want to be tracked because he needed to sneak away from the boys’ dorm to go…? Also (and this is a stretch…more stretchy than this whole theory … was his whole plan from the beginning was to set up Louis so that Louis would send Monica to Selendia and right into his grasp…!).

  5. The “blue-eyed man” in the prologue: At the end of the prologue the lurker is described as I definitely thought this was Felix. Or “Felix”. The only thing that gave me pause was the eyes are described as blue, which seems intentional. Throughout the book, the second prince is always described as having blue eyes with a hint of green. So, this discrepancy makes it a little unclear as to who the mystery shadow man is. This character sees Monica in action and admiringly says to himself that he finally found something he could be crazy about, sounding as though he had fallen in love. BUT! What if this is “Felix” who possesses a malevolent passion in Monica for her powers? I feel like that description left some room for an alternate interpretation other than the case of a young prince innocently swooning for the Silent Witch. Note the end of the book, the words describing Felix as he talks about the Silent Witch are mirrored with the prologue: 「。。。

  6. Is Emmanuel Darwin “Felix”?? – Cyril wore a protective magic brooch that was supposed to prevent excess magic power from poisoning him. The protective power of the brooch was tampered with around the same time that Cyril discovered Thornley’s involvement in the student council embezzlement with Aaron O’Brien. The result of the tampering was that Cyril was absorbing the magic power rather than emitting it, causing magic poisoning. Monica discovers the brooch had a Seven Sages name carved on the back – Emmanuel Darwin. She mentions that Louis described Darwin as a money-hungry villain.

What if the connection between Cyril Ashley, Student Council VP and Emmanuel Darwin is that “Felix” is actually Darwin disguised as Felix? Perhaps Cyril (who is attached to Felix at the hip and fiercely loyal to him) is learning magic through Darwin/Felix and Darwin/Felix gave him the protective brooch?? The real Felix is described as being trusted by noble families within and abroad due to his diplomatic skills. If Darwin were to impersonate anyone with far-reaching influence and possibly the next in line to the King, Felix would be the person to choose. Perhaps money-hungry Seven Sages Emmanuel Darwin is the figure in the prologue admiring Monica because he has some plan to use her to get rich??

  7. The embezzlement by Thornley and Aaron O’Brien - was this all “Felix’s” idea? -About Duke Crockford. “Felix” noted that it was Crockford who controls Selendia Academy, who hired Thornley and who ordered that Aaron O’Brien be named Student Council Treasurer. For these reasons, it would be difficult to lay complete blame on Felix for what happened. But, what if “Felix” was somehow behind the embezzlement, inducing Thornley subtly into committing the crime with his co-conspirator. The idea being to get rid of them and to replace O’Brien with Monica…and what about “Felix’s” complaint about Louis sniffing around Felix and discovering the embezzlement crime, arresting Thornley and take away “Felix’s” spoils? 「そろそろ尻尾を出す頃だと思っていたのだけど、獲物を横取りされたようだ」whaat tail?

Thank you for attending my conspiracy lecture.

PS. Agree with the others about everybody’s treatment of Monica. They all need to step back and stop projecting on her. What’s with all these insecure people saying Monica needs to be more this or that, less this or that - appearance, clothing, behavior, manners etc. She never criticizes anyone and she even felt bad for overdoing it with the pigs and Thornley. No wonder she retreated to the mountain hut.

What a fun book to read! Thank you to Redglare for hosting and suggesting the book. As always, I am so thankful to have discovered this IBC. It took me a couple of years of doing Wanikani review before I ventured into the community forum of Wanikani, but what a supportive community this is. Although I fell behind in the weekly readings for 沈黙の魔女, I looked forward to catching up on all the comments everyone made for each week.

And, I am also excited to have finished my second book in Japanese!

@TobiasW, congratulations on your first IBC!

Politics

Well, most of it isn’t completely new but has been alluded to before, but it got a lot clearer and more reliable since now we’re hearing it from people directly involved. For example, the much-mentioned Duke Crockford is trying to use Felix as a figurehead for their political faction, but Felix himself feels ill-treated by him, judging by his complaints that his grandfather always blames him when things go wrong. He also hates to be seen as a mere puppet. He seems to want out from under his grandfather’s thumb and do his own thing (whatever that is, and whatever part the Silent Witch plays in his plans).

If Louis understands the king’s order correctly, the king himself wants to put his own son under constant supervision by a reliable member of the Seven Sages who is not his ally. The most obvious explanation is that the king is afraid that Crockford is going to try a grab for the crown and then use Felix as his puppet king, and he wants to know if Felix is a willing collaborator. That’s why he gave the job to a member of another faction, but also phrased it as an order to guard Felix, to make it clear that he doesn’t want him to be harmed.

Also, this made me curious about the first prince. Louis thinks of Felix as a vapid pretty boy who might have a sinister hidden agenda. That tells us that Louis isn’t easily impressed by good looks and charm alone. So, what did the first prince do to impress Louis enough to join his faction? Is he ugly but actually really politically savvy?

Hm, I share @TobiasW’s opinion that Felix is the one from the prologue 100%. To be fair, it wasn’t stated clearly, but I would be really surprized if it wasn’t him

This is the quote that makes me think that he still doesn’t realize the Silent Witch’s identity:

あぁ、どうせ七賢人を監視役に仕向けるなら、〈結界の魔術師〉より、あの人にしてくれればいいのに

Why would he said that in this regretful manner if he knew that it had actually happened already.

that’s a good point いいのに meaning Felix is not yet aware that Monica is the Silent Witch. I somehow missed that important nuance.

Ok, you convinced me.

I wish I’d taken more notes, it already feels like I read this ages ago. But I remember a little about this part. I was confused as well, but eventually concluded that Felix was on the verge of exposing Thornley himself, possibly to use the case against his grandfather in some way(?), but now Louis got the credit. I suppose the tail part was some sort of metaphor for him seeing himself as an animal that hunts prey.

Thanks!

We can only speculate, but considering that Felix seemed bored out of his mind and desperate to get some more fun things in before he might be headed for a life in a golden cage, I think his primary motivation might be that he enjoys outmaneuvering scheming opponents (i.e. Thornley).

(Also I’m not convinced that he has any ill will against his grandfather.)

尻尾を出す is an expression :3

Edit: Btw, it’s fun to read everyone’s theories. I’m currently reading book 9 the latest volume and I know too much to reply safely on specific scenes

Oh, but then you can tell us how far along volume 9 is compared to the WN, and how many volumes you think there might still be. I spent a fair amount of time trying to find out, without any proper results…

Interesting expression! I believe the origin of the English expression of “showing our true colors”came from pirate ships or smugglers sailing under a false flag to deceive others.

I wonder what the origin is for 尻尾を出す. Perhaps a suspicion that among us humans are other entities disguising themselves as human (eg きつね🦊) …

Looking at the web novel chapters, I suspect volume 9 will be the last one. I actually doubt there will be one more. I’ll probably have a definite answer after I finish reading it. I’ll get back to you when I know more!

ohh, insteresting! :eyes:

Embarassingly, I didn’t realise that was what that katakana name was meant to be, despite knowing several O’Briens IRL.

Anyway, I don’t have too much to say on the plot, since I was behind for so much of it and over such a long period of reading, it’s been hard for me to maintain a coherent thought on it. Especially from like 50% to 80% of the way through, it was kind of a slog but it got better near the end from the Cyril chapter onwards.

Well. I made it to the end

To be honest, it’s definitely not the sort of book I’d have read natively. But it was fun enough to read in Japanese. Even if the katakana names slowly wore me down into the ground; and the mad twists kept me second guessing if I’d just misread something.

Anyway- roll on the next.

And the commentary - it’s always appreciated
