Week 19: サイレント・ウィッチ 🤫 🧙‍♀️

There’s going to be a book 10 :eyes: :sparkles: The story based on the web novel ended with volume 9 like I suspected, so volume 10 will be fully 書き下ろし/original. Seems like it’s going to be released this summer. 楽しみ!

By the way, the anime has started and looks pretty good so far. Good pace, excellent comedic timing and barely any details missing that I’m sad about. I’m looking forward to the next episode already! (And I kind of feel like starting the next book soon now that I’m getting a taste of it again…)

Impressions:

The camera focusing on what's important while some kind of conversation plays out in the background

Look into the face of The Slayer Of The Black Dragon Of Wogan

The best character arrives

A familiar song ~

Me too. I kept putting it off because of other clubs, but I want to read vol 2 before the anime catches up. And right now at least it’s a good time to buy, because there’s a Half price sale for all LN and manga volumes on Bookwalker.

Oh, do you think it will adapt two volumes? I don’t think I’d even have a chance to catch up then

Anime adaptions of light novels tend to rush a bit. Two volumes is the absolute minimum it would adapt, with three or even four also being possible.

I just checked: Episode 1 adapted 18% of volume 1. There are 13 episodes. If they keep that pace it’ll be 13 * 18% = 234% in total… so probably either 2 volumes if they slow down a bit, or 3 volumes if they speed up a fair bit.

That also means that I'd have 6 weeks at most to read volume 2.

Me too! I love the voice acting and character design for Monica. (And her little cabin was cute too!)

I watched the episode today, I liked it a lot! Very dynamic and cute. The quality is also pretty good.

In a way it feels a bit hasty in comparison to the light novel. Maybe without reading the book it would have been more difficult to catch the character of Louis’s wife, for example. But atmosphere feels really good!

I also liked it. I enjoyed watching it after reading the LN, because in a way you get the best of both worlds. As expected, the over the top anime humor like Louis making fun of Monica’s stuttering was also more bearable in actual anime format.

Alright, it’s highly likely going to be 3 volumes in the anime. Episode 4 wraps up volume 1, and we have 12 episodes, so…

The pacing was pretty nice so far, although I felt like this fourth episode was quite rushed, especially the battles. I’m glad I read the book first! And with that in mind: Guess I’ll have to wait a few months until I can see episodes 5 to 8, because I first want to finish 黒猫ニャンゴの冒険 1 before I can start Silent Witch volume 2, both of which will take me forever

Bonus: An unidentified witch, completely unrecognizable because of the hood

Your spoiler is hilarious :joy:

I watched it, and they actually missed some details I considered important. Like Felix’s conversation with Nero, and how Monica fell into the number world after spending a night over the 5 years of budget. I also wonder if the first time viewers got a grip on who Thornley is.

So it feels a bit rushed, but the overall impression is still nice.

I feel like they also glossed over that whole mind magic foreshadowing earlier on. I wonder if anime-only viewers got what was going on before it was made completely clear in episode 4.

Then again, they also cut a lot of Monica bullying in general, which I am very thankful for.

(Since we’re in the week 19 thread I think we probably don’t need spoiler tags for what we’ve already read in past chapters.)

Agreed.

Yeah, they dropped a lot of scenes I considered important for either the pacing or character development. While I’m not sorry to see most of the bullying scenes left out, some of them fleshed out the members of the student council. Without the scenes where they objected to Monica’s appointment, Cyril seems a lot nicer in the anime (more like a bland, generic pretty boy) and the rest don’t have even the slightest bit of personality.

At least it still feels like a cohesive story, not one of those botched adaptations that are like a badly edited summary movie (looking at you, Unnamed Memory).

I’m currently blazing through 黒猫ニャンゴの冒険 1 at the breakneck speed of 5% per day (at 65% currently!), and the reason may or may not be that I want more Silent Witch right now

On that note, I’m planning to make a casual no-schedule one-thread offshoot club for Silent Witch Volume 2. Maybe some of you also want to read the next two volumes before continuing to watch the anime version, or are up to keep me company either way?

If so, keep your eyes peeled for that thread coming soon :eyes:

Sorry for randomly popping in, but I was wondering if we were going to have an offshoot club for this! I completely disappeared for a while and then paused vol 1 for a month, but I’ve been back at it for a week and I’m at the 80% mark now. Hopefully I’ll finish Volume 1 this week (or next).

I’m still torn on whether to watch the anime or read the next couple of volumes. maybe book first

Based on personal experience, I recommend watching the first 4 episodes*, realizing that you really liked reading the book first and then deciding to read the next volume ASAP before continuing.

It’s really motivating because I also want to continue watching the anime and see Monica animated!

*) Episodes 1-4 corresponds exactly to volume 1, so it’s actually a pretty good stopping point.

That does sound better than what I had in my head. 4 eps first then

Also, for anyone who wants to continue reading soon: Volume 2 currently gives 44% time-limited points back on Amazon.co.jp. Not sure if that’s a temporary thing, but I just bought volume 2, waited a few minutes until my points arrive, and then bought volume 3 too (paid 780 yen due to points from volume 2, got 621 points back again - the system definitely works in making me feel good about using it, haha).

(For those unfamiliar with the Amazon.co.jp point system: 1 point = 1 yen off your next purchase. So if you buy something for 1000 yen and get 44% points back, you get 440 points = 440 yen subtracted from your next purchase. “time-limited” means those points expire in around a month if not used.)

Definitely. I’ve asked about it before and am still up for it. Perfect timing, too. Because I had something else that was really tough to read until recently, I only just started vol 2 on the weekend and am only 15 pages into it.

Are we going to make a thread for the offshoot or just stay here?
