I didn’t get a chance to post last week! But I have been keeping up. I have been distracted by a trip to 日本 which I am very much enjoying. Sadly no friendly ghosts so far.

I have to say I found some bits of ch 5 quite tricky - I’m not really sure why. It’s usually when Kazu is in conversation with an adult. That combo seems to melt my brain somehow. Anyway.

Thoughts on this chapter

I thought the interaction with our ghost girl was fun - but a bit of a cliffhanger of an ending eh?

Is anyone else worried that the first thing he does after speaking to another scary older person is go and meet her? I hope he wasn’t followed…

As someone (thank you but I’ve forgotten who it was!) pointed out, there are some later chapters which are images which is going to destroy my workflow for reading this. I think my understanding is going to plummet haha. But I’m enjoying it while I do have one-tap accessible lookups at least.

I also have found chapter 5 really tough! For me it’s more about parsing the prose I think … particularly when there’s less kanji than usual. I had to read his conversation with his mom multiple times though, to figure out what they were discussing exactly.

The second part of chapter 5 was not so bad! I thought it would take me a while to catch up, but I finished up week 11’s reading earlier today and then finished the chapter just now!

I love Kazu’s humor. He’s like “yes, I’m on a very serious mission to save my family shrine and my classmate, and the watermelon is still warm, but if you offer me watermelon I will be eating it!”

And when his friend sees him with Akari and he sort of dies on the inside.

おれはもう、どうなってもいいとひらきなおっていた。

I looked up ひらきなおる and the definition was thus: もうどうでもいいとあきらめて、堂々とした態度になる。 The thought of that just tickles me. This 11 (?) year old boy becoming 堂々 out of mortification. :joy:
