Tried re-starting my PC, but still enountered the same problem :(

Is there some solution for this?
Having this same problem :( was really looking forward to this.
I hope this can get fixed soon. I tried all sorts of things, including making sure my browser was up to date and what not
So glad I'm not the only one :')

What really confused me too was that I can only get to the extension using the link. If I try searching the Chrome Store it doesn't show up at all.

You haven't learned any vocab yet, so nothing would show up for you, I imagine.

Did you put your API key in?

Yup, I know that I'm behind on my lessons (31 waiting for me, winter time makes me too sleepy x.x), but that doesn't change the fact that at least for some the extension won't install at all...

I wanted to try installing it, then go through all those lessons and force myself to learn the vocab while reading fanfics etc. as I squeeze at least two short chapters of those in per day.

if the extension doesn’t install at all then make sure you’re signed into a gmail account. It worked for me when I had trouble installing it.

Worked like a charm. Thank you so much! :D

Just putting it out there for someone who may still have that problem, I had done the following: signed into gmail, updated chrome, cleared caches and whatnot, restarted browser and computer, and standard plug checking.

What would happen is after clicking the button to add the extension it would either not download at all, or would download but not start the installation and the bar would be stuck at ‘checking…’

Anyhow, I just tried a few more times after that here and there, and well i guess one time the All Mighty Allicrab decided to bless me, as it worked. I’m not sure what might have been different though, so I hope if someone else has the problem, just try again later? hehe

Now to abuse this thing! buwahahahha

This extension is so much fun!
Thank you so very much chedkid!

Been loving this, but I’ve noticed after a very short time it stopped working “Automatically” - Now I’m stuck on click mode… had a quick look at it seemed like no-one else had posted this issue, so I thought I’d mention it?

Edit: I played around for a bit swapping between click and auto, and now auto seems to be working again, yay!

Hello you fine people!

I’ve updated the extension to 1.0.2.  Special thanks to @fvieira for submitting a number of bug reports and for just being a nice guy in general.

As always the extension can be found here: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/wanikanify/dbnpfdbkecfgaffopefhalliecehhkhj

Or you can update by going to chrome://extensions and pushing the “Update extensions now” button. As always, I welcome your feedback and support!

Changes:

  • Clicking the Crabigator toggles Japanese and English.
  • Added SRS filters. Pick which SRS categories you want to substitue
  • Improved searching
  • Fix refresh loop problem with Google and other related sites
  • Clicking a kanji will switch the word to English, and clicking that english word will switch it back to Japanese
  • Hovering your mouse over the kanji will show the english in a small popup, and vice-versa.
  • It should be faster.
  • If your API key is not set, a popup will request you type it in.
Known issues:
  • There are some style clashes. The extension injects a <span> element into the DOM of the page. If there is a CSS rule for span, it will be applied to the element. This breaks the visual aspect of some sites (only one I’ve seen so far, which, funny enough, is WaniKani).

Quick suggestion - is it possible to add a “Don’t run on this domain” option?

Love using this; but when I’m working, it gets really hard to read stackoverflow etc with it turned on, haha… if we could disable at the domain level it would be handy as hell!

That was odd… I just had a “Wanikanify has crashed, please click here to reload the extension” just a few seconds ago.

Browsing the Interwebs to study???.. I guess it’s worth getting Chrome.

Also, if you have it set on auto then press the button, it only reverts for a short amount of time… Can this be changed?

Great idea! I’m unable to test it yet because, well, I am a total n00b so have to unlock some kanji first…

Also, the Chrome Webstore shows a wanikanified screenshot of kottke.org. I really like that blog, too.

Make sure you guys use this for checking weather also.

It’s pretty awesome:

 ^_^;

Hahaha, it’s kind of fun when synonyms with different meanings come up.

“Feels 好き”

Makes you think a bit more, I think, which is fun.

 Yeah, I thought the same thing. ^^;

Though I wonder how useful it'd be to also incorporate not just single words but verbs.
For instance, replace I am going to buy this apple. with I am going 買う this apple.
Though I imagine it'd also end up looking something like: 私 です 買う これ りんご。
It might not be a good idea. Might get confusing or encourage bad grammar. ( ̄~ ̄;)

I second this. I absolutely love this extension, but it gets a little distracting when I'm reading code or scientific papers. A simple blacklist/whitelist feature would be much appreciated.

The extension Chrome Nanny has a good implementation of this (which allows regex), and its code is available on github here: https://github.com/saravanan-thirumuruganathan/Chrome-Nanny

Hi folks,

Sorry I’ve been absent from this thread; I was on vacation. I’ll add a blacklist feature in the next version. Maybe a week or so before I can get a release out. Stay tuned!
