Step right up to engage in a new and exciting activity thing with the community!
Introducing the Wanikani Wednesday Weekly Word Web
Just what is this newfangled concept?
I’m glad you’ve asked, imaginary forum user! It’s a weekly activity which will start and end on Wednesdays in which I post a word as a prompt and you, the people, respond with words you associate with that prompt. In Japanese of course, so we can treat it as if it counts as studying. It could be the first thing you think of, the funniest thing you think of, or the freakiest thing you think of. As long as the association is reasonably natural to you and you didn’t specifically work over time to come up with something unorthodox and completely unrelated. That would be weird.
How do we do it?
On Wednesdays, I’ll post a word that I’ve come up with (by suddenly remembering that it is the day for this and frantically googling for common/interesting japanese words) and you’ll respond with not one, but two things. Each participant will post one word and one why. Once all participants have added their responses, I might then make a chart of the word associations from that prompt. (depending on me finding a good software for that and having the time to do it each week)
One Word
This can actually be more than one word if we’re being technical. Like if the prompt was food and you responded with “ice cream” or “hot dog” that would still count for it. But try to keep it brief and not a whole sentence to describe your associations.
One Why
This is where you describe why you thought of that word. It doesn’t have to be fancy but a small phrase or description relating the word you added to the prompt it responds to. For instance if the prompt word was water then ForumUser220PostsEveryDay might respond with fish because fish live in water while SuzanneSkeletons might respond with cold because water is often cold to the touch or when drank.
Oh, Gee Whilikers, when does it start?
I… actually haven’t decided yet.
But we can do a poll!
When do we start?
Now (soonest Wednesday, October 22)
A couple weeks from now (November 5th)
A month from now (November 19th)
Start of December (December 3rd)
End of the year (December 31st)

Who’s allowed to join up?
Everyone who’s interested, so another poll for who is interested.
Who’s In?
Gadzooks! count me in
Sounds interesting but I’ll wait and see how it works
I hate words and their associated meanings and how they relate to one another
I just came here to click this button

Once I have a better idea of interest and stuff I’ll work on a list of prompt words but this is something I thought about doing for a little while so I hope that it turns out to be fun. Thanks for reading.
I should have known when I included this as an option that it could be picked, but I didn’t expect so much interest in the soonest possible option. I’ll try to be ready.
Moshi Moshi, but wait, then who was phone?
I’m glad I had a unique idea then. No AI needed . I hope to get a nice amount of community participation without needing too much work out of me to organize each week. I think I’ll keep it all in this one thread instead of a new one every week like a book club. Nothing too fancy for formatting I think, just respond with the word and the reason it’s associated with the prompt. I’ll do the prompt in English first and then Japanese, so I guess response words would also be English (with the Japanese in parenthesis maybe?).
If it’s unclear I can answer questions but I think it’ll clear up once we do a week of it. Some associations will be obvious, but some will have interesting stories and I think that’s why I wanted to include the why part. Sometimes a unique experience means you have an unusual association or you just think of something other people didn’t.
I’m still unsure exactly when in the day to post the first prompts, but I know now what the first two prompt words will be and they’re appropriately Halloweenish words. Nothing too scary to work with, but maybe it’ll be a little spooky for the times. I guess I’ll do it at midnight my time, let’s see if I can get that into a format that’s time zone friendly.
I’m not sure if the word itself could be included or not, but it’s fortune telling with blood types which is cool (I’m an O and I guess? I don’t quite believe in it but it’s interesting)
That’s a good question and it’ll be fine to include the word if it makes more sense that way. I had thought about the word blood pressure earlier including blood in it.
I like this response. There’s already something I didn’t expect but that is a thing in Japan. My type is B+, which I like because it’s “be positive” when said aloud.
That’s so cute! I love that Blood type fortune telling is basically taking horoscopes and zodiacs and then applying it to Only the letter of the blood. So positive and negative mean nothing in the scope of the personality aspects.
I’ve never been a big astrology person, and I don’t really like the MBTI either so I don’t think I would like blood typing either, but it is fun to read about one I’m less familiar with. I’m an eccentric and creative rule breaker. (At least I’m not breaking the library rules by committing library crimes)
I didn’t say it in the rules but yeah, if someone’s already said the one you’re thinking of that’s out. That may lead to some less than obvious reaches but that’s still okay.
Tears is a good association for blood though even if it’s because of song lyrics, it reminds me of blood sweat and tears in English. You don’t literally cook with these things but you put figurative blood sweat and tears into anything good you make.
